Otter Athletics Returns To Action With Scoreless Draw

Men’s soccer draws with Stanislaus State in CSUMB’s first NCAA competition since Mar. 11, 2020

SEASIDE, Calif. — For the first time since the Cal State Monterey Bay water polo team took a 17–9 decision from McKendree College on Mar. 11, 2020, an Otter team took the field for an NCAA competition Thursday afternoon.

CSUMB's men's soccer team played Stanislaus State to a nonconference scoreless draw at the Otter Sports Complex. To the participants and fans who witnessed it, however, the result took a back seat to the fact that the teams were back and celebrating the joy of competition.

The match got a bit chippy with 12 bookings and 40 total fouls. But it quickly settled into contest where Stanislaus kept absorbing Otter pressure while searching for a score on the counter.

CSUMB out–shot Stanislaus 10–4 for the match. But the Otters had trouble finding the finishing touch despite numerous forays into the offensive third.

For their part, the Warriors put just one shot on frame, but it almost decided the match.

Countering off of an Otter corner, Stanislaus worked the ball into a wild scramble in the Otter box. Julian Madrigal looked certain to break the tie, but sophomore goalkeeper Adrian Muñoz (Pasadena/Univ. of Redlands) got just enough of the ball to deflect it wide in what proved to be the best scoring chance for either team.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Jack Montejano's speculative effort from distance sailed well over Munoz's crossbar as the final horn sounded.

FOR OPENERS: With Thursday's draw, CSUMB now is 8–12–4 all–time in openers. At the NCAA Division II level, CSUMB is 6–7–4.

FOR (HOME) OPENERS:  CSUMB now is 8–13–3 all–time in home openers. At the NCAA level (since 2004), the Otters are 5–9–1 in home openers.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Adrian Muñoz needed to make just one save—but it was a big one—to earn a clean sheet in his first CSUMB appearance. He becomes the first Otter goalkeeper to post a shutout in his first Otter appearance since Brendan Baca shutout Chico State 1–0 on Sept. 7, 2007.

REBOLLAR RECORD WATCH: Although he was held off the scoresheet Thursday, senior midfielder Adrian Rebollar entered the season ranked No. 7 on the Otter career assist list with 10. He needs one helper to tie Andrew Breault for No. 6. Nic Torricelli owns the Otter career record with 22 assists.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: –; ASSISTS: –; POINTS: –; SHOTS: Antonio Ordoñez/Adrian Rebollar/Javier Romero 2; SAVES: Adrian Muñoz 1.

THE LAST WORD… "It feels great to be on the pitch again. We felt like we defended really well and worked really hard to find a winner, but it was not to be. We will keep working on getting better each day to be ready for our next game on Sunday." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play another CCAA foe in a nonconference match when they host Cal State East Bay Sunday (Sept. 5) for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
