Otter Offense Continues To Roll In 5–1 Win At ArtU

CSUMB scores five goals for the second consecutive match

SAN FRANCISCO — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team continued its recent offensive surge by posting its second consecutive 5–1 victory Thursday afternoon, this time defeating Academy of Art Paul Goode Field.

CSUMB (3–0–1 overall) got two goals apiece from Antonio Ordoñez (Vacaville HS) and Pedro Hernandez (Mt. Diablo HS) to remain unbeaten.  Hernandez also chipped in a pair of assists.

Senior Adrian Rebollar (Watsonville HS) added his third goal of 2021. Sophomore goalkeeper Adrian Muñoz (Pasadena/Cathedral HS) made three saves.

CSUMB got on the board early, scoring his first of the season in the ninth minute. ArtU equalized just after the restart on an Adrian Cekala penalty, but it took less than two minutes for Ordoñez to complete his brace and restore the Otter lead.

Rebollar scored six minutes later to put CSUMB in control. ArtU managed just one shot over the final half hour and couldn't solve Muñoz or the Otter backline aside from the penalty.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Adrian Rebollar finished a Pedro Hernandez assist with a bullet to put CSUMB up 3–1 in the 60th minute. ArtU managed just a single shot on frame the rest of the match.

ELITE EIGHT ADRIAN… With his goal in Thursday's 5–1 win at Academy of Art, Adrian Rebollar moved up to No. 8 on the Otter all–time scoring list with 35 points. He needs two points to pass Kyle Millerick (2004–07) for seventh place.

KEEP IT CLEAN… The Otters (3–0–1) are unbeaten after four matches for the second consecutive season and the third time in program history (2013, '19, '21). The 2019 squad — Graeme Jaap's first as head coach — set the Otter record by opening the season 5–0–1.

ALMOST SPOTLESS… CSUMB has allowed just three goals in the first four matches, trailing only the 2019 Otters (2) for the fewest allowed through four games. The 2019 team allowed just four goals through the first five games, also the current record.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Pedro Hernandez/Antonio Ordoñez 2; ASSISTS: Pedro Hernandez 2; POINTS: Pedro Hernandez 6; SHOTS: Adrian Rebollar 5; SAVES: Adrian Muñoz 3.

THE LAST WORD… "The boys have been working extremely hard in practice to be more ruthless in front of goal and it was good to see that work come through in the game. We need to make this level of conversion a habit rather than an exception." – CSUMB Assistant Coach Andrew Livingston

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home for their penultimate nonconference match when they host Menlo College Saturday (Sept.. 20) for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
