Ed Gasper Hire Graphic

Otters Add Another Gasper To The Raft

Ed Gasper, father of CSUMB ace Cassie Gasper, name pitching coach

July 09, 2021

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay softball added another Gasper to its raft with the hire of Ed Gasper as pitching coach.

For those wondering, the theory of relativity applies in this case. Gasper is the father of Otter ace Cassie Gasper, a junior who led the CCAA in strikeouts and was one of only two CCAA starters to average more than one strikeout per inning in 2020 (teammate Hayley Fein was the other).

Gasper not only has a 25–year career as a pitching coach, he was one of fastpitch softball's top pitchers during his playing days. He led his team to the North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) World Series title in 2002 and was inducted into the NAFA Hall of Fame in 2013.

"To be able to hire an assistant coach with the experience and expertise Ed brings to this position is a big win for MB Softball," says Otter Head Coach Andrea Kenney. "I look forward to working with Ed and anticipate him having an immediate positive impact on the program."

"I'm excited to be joining the CSUMB softball coaching staff," says Gasper. "I can't wait to help coach Kenney take the program to the next level."

Gasper last coached at the collegiate level as an assistant at Merced College in 2018. He also served as the pitching coach at Merced's El Capitan High School from 2013–17.

After missing the entire 2021 season due to the COVID pandemic, Otter Softball will return to the field in 2022 seeking its fifth CCAA title since 2012 and its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 12 seasons. The Otters also need just 26 wins to claim their 500th win since the program began in 2006.
