Melhart Accepts Permanent Role As Assistant AD/SWA

Maureen “Moe” Melhart leaves volleyball bench for senior leadership role

June 23, 2021

SEASIDE, Calif. — After a successful six–year run as head coach of the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball program, Maureen "Moe" Melhart (@MoeMelhart) will move full–time to the administrative suite to serve as the Otters' assistant athletic director, external operations and senior woman administrator. Melhart had been serving as interim development director along with her volleyball duties during the 2020–21 academic year in which the Otter teams did not compete due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I'm incredibly excited to have the opportunity to continue building on the successful relationships we've cultivated over the past year," says Melhart. "I came here nearly seven years ago to do my part to grow this program and continue building a strong culture within this volleyball program and I believe that we have accomplished that. Now, I think I have an opportunity to help elevate our entire department and we owe it to our coaches and student–athletes to give them that."

"Moe has been a valuable ambassador for CSUMB and Otter Athletics as our head volleyball coach. She is well prepared and motivated to make this transition from coaching into administration," says Director of Athletics Kirby Garry (@kirbygarry). "I'm thrilled that she is able to take this next step in her career right here at CSUMB. Moe is a highly organized, self-starter who is committed to collaboration with University Advancement, our alumni, friends, families and community partners to best serve and support our student–athletes and coaching staff. As SWA, she will be a strong voice and senior leader for our department and University. This is a role that I'm confident Moe will grow into, learn and positively impact our University's presence and influence at the conference and national level."

Melhart already has led several successful development initiatives, beginning with the Otter Alumni Challenge last October, which provided teams the opportunity to raise support while creating stronger bonds with their alumni. Another big win was April's A Night With The Otters, which helped strengthen ties with Otter supporters while serving as a launch vehicle for the Otter Athletics Fund, supporting the academic and athletic success of current and future CSUMB student–athletes.

"It's been a privilege to work with donors and alumni over the past year," says Melhart. "I think an important part of our future success involves bringing those groups into what we are doing."

"This is the perfect time for someone of Moe's experience and talents to be a driving force behind our marketing, promotions and external engagement with our campus and local communities" says Garry.

Melhart's new duties will include the growth, implementation, and execution of a comprehensive marketing and promotions plan for home athletics competitions. She'll also be responsible for expanding and creating new brand awareness for CSUMB Athletics, including oversight of the trademark licensing program associated with official CSUMB Athletics logos and marks.

Important, if more behind the scenes, will be her duties coordinating programming and events for the department functions, including events such as Homecoming and the Otter Athletics Hall of Fame, in addition to other department receptions and events.

Of course, taking on these new responsibilities means Melhart is giving up coaching volleyball, a role that brought her to CSUMB and one in which she's enjoyed much success. She won 51 matches in five seasons on the bench, leading Otter Volleyball to the first postseason bids in program history in 2017 and again in 2018, when CSUMB claimed a share of the CCAA North Division title.

"Giving up coaching this group of strong, amazing young women is one of the most difficult decisions I've ever had to make," says Melhart. "But I felt that I could make this choice because I have so much confidence in what we've built that I know not only will they be okay—they'll be great. I'm so thankful for the support from Kirby Garry and the rest of the administration as I move forward in this new role. I am also so grateful for my athletes both current and former for all they gave to the volleyball program over the last few years, they are truly a special group of young women."
