Second Alumni Challenge Surpasses 2020 Totals

Challenge brings in more than 350 gifts and $15,000

November 07, 2021

SEASIDE, Calif. — The second Cal State Monterey Bay Otter Athletics Alumni Challenge proved to be a worthy successor to the inaugural campaign of 2020, with the event setting records for gifts and total contributions.

This year's Challenge ran from Oct. 11–17. The week-long event brought in 354 total gifts and $15,620 in total contributions, surpassing the 2020 totals in both areas. The first Alumni Challenge raised $14,629 from 235 contributors.

"I am so thankful for the continued support for Otter Athletics from our alumni. For the second year in a row, they showed up in a major way for our current athletes and coaches," says Moe Melhart, CSUMB's assistant athletic director for external operations. "In addition to the support from alumni, it was so great to see fans, community members and families join in the competition. We look forward to including that component in future challenges."

The format of the Challenge was quite simple. Each of CSUMB's 13 intercollegiate teams engaged its alumni with the aim of increasing both alumni involvement and support for the current Otter student–athletes. All funds raised during the challenge directly support the donors' chosen team, enhancing both scholarship and general program needs.

A fun part of the Challenge is the competition between teams to see which group game bring in the most contributions (adjusted for roster size). This year, the top three teams for alumni contributions were:
  1. Water Polo
  2. Baseball
  3. Softabll

In addition, softball won for the most overall contributions (family and community support in addition to alumni).
