Otters’ Path Clear After Scoreless Draw At San Bern

CSUMB guarantees first winning season at NCAA level with draw

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The path to the playoffs became crystal clear for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team after playing Cal State San Bernardino to a scoreless draw Sunday afternoon at Premier Field.

One thing is certain: CSUMB (7–5–4, 4–4–2 CCAA) needs to win its regular season finale Thursday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Beyond that, one of two things needs to happen. Either Stanislaus State needs to lose or tie its final game at Cal State East Bay or Cal State L.A. and Cal Poly Pomona must play to a tie.

As for Sunday's match, CSUMB had the better run of play for most of the afternoon. But like each of their previous three ties, the Otters couldn't convert their opportunities into goals, allowing a San Bernardino team well out of the postseason race to escape with a share of the spoils.

CSUMB out–shot the Coyotes 10–5 and put six of their attempts on frame compared to just two for San Bernardino. The Otters also built an 8–3 edge in corner kicks.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… the Otters couldn't convert a pair of corner kicks in the final minute of overtime.

OTTERS ARE WINNERS… Sunday's draw guarantees that the Otters will finish with a winning record for the first time since moving to the NCAA Division II level in 2004. The last time the Otters finished above .500 came in their final NAIA campaign (2003) when they went 11–7–2.

FIT TO BE TIED… Sunday's scoreless draw at San Bernardino was CSUMB's fourth of the season. That ties the school record for, well, ties, set by the 2017 Otters.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Sunday's 0–0 draw at San Bernardino was CSUMB's ninth clean sheet of the season. That equals the school record set by the 2018 Otters.

McKESSY No. 3 SHUTOUTS… Sunday's shutout at San Bernardino was the fifth this season for freshman Aubrey McKessy. That ties her with Lily Garza (2013) and Melissa Moen (2002) for No. 3 on the Otter single–season list. She needs one more tie Moen's 2002 season for No. 2. Stephanie Busch set the CSUMB record with eight in 2018.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Jasmine Safarians 6; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 2.

THE LAST WORD… "We are gutted that we were not able to leave SoCal with wins. We were attacking minded and created great chances. We will keep pushing this Thursday for a positive result." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude the regular season portion of their schedule Thursday (Nov. 4) with a match at Cal State Dominguez Hills.  The women will kickoff at 2 p.m. as the second game of doubleheader action.
