Epic Ending Sees Otters Fall One Goal Short

CSUMB falls just short of the playoffs after 3–3 tie at Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif. — In a finale worthy of a heavyweight title fight, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team came up one goal short of the promised land after playing Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 3–3 draw Thursday at Toro Stadium.

The tie leaves CSUMB's final record at 7–5–5 overall and 4–4–3 in the CCAA as they miss the CCAA Tournament by three points, the closest they've ever come to the postseason. The bell actually tolled just a few minutes before the final whistle, however, when Cal State L.A. scored in overtime to beat Cal Poly Pomona, officially ending the Otter playoff run.

Despite the disappointment of missing out on the playoffs, the Otters ended their season in memorable fashion. After taking leads of 1–0 and 2–1 on goals by Natalia Leroux (Martinez/College Park HS) and Sierra Levy (Tulare Western HS), CSUMB found itself trailing when the Toros responded with two goals six minutes apart to go up 3–2.
It took the Otters less than two minutes to draw level again. Jasmine Safarians (Pleasant Hill/College Park HS) drew a penalty in the box then sent Toro goalkeeper Alyssa Newsome the wrong way on the resulting spot kick.
After the flurry of six scores in 23 minutes, the lids went on the goals once again and that's the way the match ended.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Alyssa Newsome scooped up the final shot attempt by Alexandra Diaz in the 109th minute. It was the last attempt on goal by either team.

WE BEAT THE BEST… It's a shame that the Otters didn't make the CCAA Tournament given their success against the top teams in the conference this season. CSUMB finished 5–2–1 against teams that advance to the CCAA Tournament, incuding wins over the numbers one (Sonoma State), two (Chico State) and three (Cal State East Bay) seeds.

SOMETHING TO BUILD ON… Although the Otters finished short of their postseason goal, they laid a strong foundation upon which to build in 2022. Their 7–5–5 record is the program's best at the NCAA level and the first winning season of any kind since 2003.

McKESSY'S ELEVEN… Freshman goalkeeper Aubrey McKessy made a career–high 11 saves Thursday at Dominguez Hills. That mark ranks No. 5 on the Otter all–time list. They were the most saves by an Otter since Alyssa Noh posted 13 at Chico State on Nov. 9, 2019.

RECORD WATCH: LEVY EDITION… Sierra Levy played her final match as an Otter Thursday at Dominguez Hills. She scored her fifth goal of the season, tying her for No. 13 on the Otter single–season list…The goal was the 10th of her career, tying her with four players for No. 6 on the career goals list…Her 13 total points rank No. 14 on that season list…With two points she tied Megan Minnick (2001–04) for No. 6 on the career points list with 26.

FERGUSON LENDS A HAND… Sophomore Caitlyn Ferguson tied an Otter record by passing a pair of assists Thursday at Dominguez Hills. She became the 11th Otter to accomplish that feat. Brenda Uribe did it earlier this season in a win over Chico State. Jasmine Safarians did it in 2019 at Menlo.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Natalia Leroux scored her first collegiate goal with the opener in Thursday match at Dominguez Hills.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Sierra Levy/Natalia Leroux/Jasmine Safarians 1; ASSISTS: Caitlyn Ferguson 2; POINTS: Caitlyn Ferguson/Sierra Levy/Natalia Leroux/Jasmine Safarians 2; SHOTS: Jasmine Safarians 6; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 11.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… Thursday's match brought a close to the CSUMB Otter soccer season.
