Draw At San Bernardino Keeps Otter Playoff Hopes Afloat

CSUMB needs a win and help Thursday to return to the postseason

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team kept its postseason hopes alive Sunday afternoon by playing in-form Cal State San Bernardino to a scoreless draw at Premier Field.

The draw means CSUMB (6–4–6, 2–4–4 CCAA) now must defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills in its regular season finale Thursday afternoon in Carson. Additionally, the Otters will need a loss by Sonoma State (at San Francisco State) and a loss or tie by Chico State (vs. Humboldt State).

Sunday's match was a well–played affair between two teams with their eyes set on the postseason. Both team defenses were in solid form as the offenses combined to put just seven shots on frame in the entire match.

Freshman goalkeeper Matthias Milton (Elk Grove/Jesuit HS) made a huge save in the 63rd minute to deny San Bernardino perhaps its best scoring chance. Marcus Decouto (Turlock HS) had a glorious chance to win it for the Otters in overtime, but sent an attempt over the bar in the 96th minute while 1v1 with Coyote goalkeeper Juan Nieves.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… San Bernardino cleared a loose ball in the box from danger inside the final 10 seconds over overtime.

BACK TO BACK… Sunday's draw at San Bernardino guarantees that the Otters (6–4–6) will finish with a winning record for the second consecutive season. Graeme Jaap becomes the first coach in CSUMB soccer history to accomplish that feat. The 2019 Otters went 9–6–2 under Jaap.

FIT TO BE TIED… The Otters extended their school record for ties in a season to six with Sunday's scoreless draw at San Bernardino. If they tie their regular season finale at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday, they will equal the NCAA record for ties in a season set three times previously, last by Cal State San Bernardino in 2012.

RANDOM TIE FACT INVOLVING THE OTTERS AND COYOTES… Cal State San Bernardino would own the NCAA record for ties outright if not for the Otters. In the penultimate game of the 2012 season, CSUMB's Juan Montellano scored with one second left in double overtime to defeat the Coyotes 1–0 and deny them the record–breaking draw.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Pedro Hernandez/Janos Kömmerling/Javier Romero 2; SAVES: Matthias Milton 4.

THE LAST WORD… "We were really happy with how the guys responded after a disappointing showing on Friday. Really good, hard-working performance and created some really good chances but, unfortunately, could not find the back of the net. The senior class were excellent today and epitomized our toughness and hard work." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude the regular season portion of their schedule Thursday (Nov. 4) with a match at Cal State Dominguez Hills.  The men will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. as the opening game of doubleheader action.
