Otters Go Out With a Bang, Shutout Toros 3–0 In finale

Julian Contreras scores twice, Pedro Hernandez assists on both

CARSON, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer saw its 2021 season out in style Thursday afternoon by shutting out Cal State Dominguez Hills 3–0 at Toro Stadium.

CSUMB (7–4–6 overall, 3–4–4 CCAA) didn't get the other results it needed from around the league to earned the postseason bid it coveted, but that didn't stop the Otters from dealing a body blow to the Toros along the way.

Freshman goalkeeper Matthias Milton (Elk Grove/Jesuit HS) tossed his second shutout in just his second collegiate start to stymie the Dominguez Hills offense. The Otters attack, meanwhile, saw a passing of the torch as senior leading scorer Pedro Hernandez Bay Point/Mt. Diablo HS) assisted on a pair of markers from freshman Julian Contreras (Watsonville HS).

Hernandez broke the ice in the 27th minute when some great backtracking by Jordan Sime (Pasadena HS) allowed Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS) to feed a perfect through ball to Hernandez, from which he finished a 1v1 opportunity for his 10th goal of the season.

Contreras doubled the Otter advantage barely two minutes later when he rewarded a long Hernandez run with a sure finish for his first collegiate goal. Contreras ended any drama the match still held when Hernandez worked his way into the box a slipped him a short through ball for a clean, side-net finish.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Julian Contreras completed his brace to put the Otters up 3–0 in the 70th minute.

FIT TO BE TIED… The Otters finish 2021 with a  school–record for ties in a season (6). They just missed the NCAA record for ties in a season of seven set three times previously, last by Cal State San Bernardino in 2012.

TEST AGAINST THE BEST… The Otters saved their best for the best in 2021. CSUMB ended the season with a 3–1–4 record against teams that qualified for the CCAA Tournament.

TWICE AS NICE: TEAM EDITION… Thursday's win at Dominguez Hills means the Otters (7–4–6) will finish with a winning record for the second consecutive season. Graeme Jaap becomes the first coach in CSUMB soccer history to accomplish that feat. The 2019 Otters went 9–6–2 under Jaap.

TWICE AS NICE: PLAYER EDITION… Freshman goalkeeper Matthias Milton had quite the debut in the final week of the season. Making his first two collegiate starts, Milton shutout the No. 3 (CSUDH) and No. 4 (San Bernardino) teams in the CCAA. He is the first goalkeeper in history to earn shutouts in his first two Otter starts.

RECORD WATCH: HERNANDEZ EDITION… With a goal and two assists Thursday at Dominguez Hills, Pedro Hernandez became just the eight player in Otter history to reach 40 career points…he scored his 16th career goal to tie Adrian Rebollar for No. 7 on the Otter career goals list…he became just the fifth player in CSUMB history to score 10 goals in a season and just the fourth to do it at the NCAA Division II level…his 26 points in 2021 move him up to No. 4 on the Otters single–season points list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Julian Contreras 2; ASSISTS: Pedro Hernandez 2; POINTS: Julian Contreras/Pedro Hernandez 4; SHOTS: Adrian Rebollar 4; SAVES: Matthias Milton 6.

THE LAST WORD… "It was a really good performance today from the guys. We were at it right from the first whistle and scored three good goals, which has been our Achilles' heel this season. Obviously very disappointed to not make the conference tournament but onwards and upwards. Kudos to our senior group, they will be missed on and off the field." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… Thursday's match brought a close to the CSUMB Otter soccer season.
