Dominating Performance Goes For Naught At San Marcos

Cougars upset Otters on late goal

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — A dominating performance came undone with a single defensive miscue as Cal State San Marcos surprised Cal State Monterey Bay 1–0 Friday afternoon at The Cage on the CSUSM campus.

Against the run of play, San Marcos' Alyssa Pigoni took advantage of a miscue at the top of the Otter box. After three defenders could clear the ball the pesky forward found possession and curled a perfect shot just inside the near post for the only score of the match.

CSUMB out–shot San Marcos, 15–6, and doubled the Cougars in corners, 6–3. San Marcos goalkeeper Allison Marcure had an answer for all 11 balls the Otters put on frame, however, to make Pigoni's marker stand up.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Allison Marcure secured a low shot attempt by Mitsy Ramirez with five seconds remaining to run out the clock.

THINKING AHEAD… Although Friday's loss puts a crimp in CSUMB's CCAA Tournament aspirations, the Otter are still very much alive to earn one of the six available berths. While CSUMB no longer controls its own destiny, winning both of its last two matches will put it in very good position for the post season. It is still possible for the Otters to get in with one win or with two ties as well.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Mitsy Ramirez 4; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 4.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their season–ending, 3–match roadtrip Sunday with a doubleheader at Cal State San Bernardino. The women will kick things off at 11:30 a.m. followed by the men at 2 p.m.
