Otters Waste Spectacular Equalizer At San Marcos

Otters tie in the 83rd minute, but late red helps Cougars pull out 2–1 win

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — A brilliant 83rd minute equalizer off the head of Pedro Hernandez (Bay Point/Mt. Diablo HS) went for naught Friday as a straight red card following the play led to a late Cal State San Marcos goal and a 2–1 Cougar win at The Cage on the CSUSM campus.

The Hernandez goal finished a perfectly executed set piece in which freshman Francisco Ponce (Soquel HS) curled a free kick to the far post and the head of junior striker Antonio Ordoñez (Vacaville HS). Ordoñez's cross found Hernandez free in the middle of the goal area, from where he headed home to tie the match at one.

But the play came at a cost. In the aftermath, sophomore goalkeeper Adrian Muñoz sprinted the length of the field to join the celebration. On his jog back, he shouted something at a San Marcos player that drew him a straight red card.

The Cougars capitalized on the man advantage five minutes later when Jacob Cuccia headed in a near post corner for the match–winner.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Jacob Cuccia's header broke a 1–1 tie in the 88th minute. It proved to be the final shot for either team.

THINKING AHEAD… Despite Friday's loss, the Otters are still alive for a bid to the 6–team CCAA Tournament, but the path there became significantly more complicated. The Otters must win at least one of their final two matches to have a chance, with significant help. Two wins would make their path much easier, but still not guaranteed.

HERNANDEZ MOVES UP, SEASON EDITION… Senior Pedro Hernandez moved up a pair of lists in the Otter single–season record book Friday afternoon. He scored his ninth goal of the season, tying him with Nathan Northup (2003) for No. 5 on that list. He now has 22 points, tying him with Nic Torricelli (2003) for No. 6 on that list.

HERNANDEZ MOVES UP, CAREER EDITION… Pedro Hernandez broke into the Otter career Top 10 in two categories as well. His goal Friday gives him 36 points, moving him into a tie for the No. 8 spot with Kyle Millerick (2004–07). The goal also was the 15th of his career, tying him with Nathan Northup (2002–03) for the No. 9 spot on that list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Pedro Hernandez 1; ASSISTS: Antonio Ordoñez/Francisco Ponce 1; POINTS: Pedro Hernandez 2; SHOTS: 6 Otters 1; SAVES: Adrian Muñoz 5.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their season–ending, 3–match roadtrip Sunday with a doubleheader at Cal State San Bernardino. The women will kick things off at 11:30 a.m. followed by the men at 2 p.m.
