Otters Shutout L.A. To Retake Driver’s Seat In CCAA Race

An Olympico from Mitsy Ramirez highlights 2–0 Otter victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — An Olympico from sophomore Mitsy Ramirez (Richmond/UC-–Colorado Springs) and freshman Aubrey McKessy's (Canyon County/Canyon HS) fourth shutout put Cal State Monterey Bay back in the driver's seat in the CCAA Tournament race by lifting the Otters to a 2–0 win over Cal State L.A. Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

On a day when Otter home fans said farewell to seniors Brooke Tafoya, Sierra Levy, Allexxis Hand, Monica Hrncir, Katie Searle and Brenda Uribe, CSUMB climbed back into fifth place in the race to qualify for the 6–team CCAA Tournament. CSUMB (7–4–3/4–3–1 CCAA) sits on 13 points. Cal state L.A. (4–8–2/4–3–1) also has 13 points but the Otters hold the tiebreaker with Sunday's win.

Steady winds often topping 20 miles per hour impacted the match, but did nothing the stop the brilliant effort from Ramirez, whose hard–driven corner found the back of the net in the 15th minute. Less than two minutes after the interval, sophomore Catalina Villegas (Clovis HS/UNLV) buried the rebound of a Caitlyn Ferguson (Dana Hills HS) from just outside the box.

The wind affected both sides, turning the match into a defensive affair that saw just nine total shot attempts: Six for the Otters and three for Cal State L.A.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Catalina Villegas scored her second of the season 1:27 into the second half. L.A. took all three of its shot attempts in the second half but never seriously threatened the Otter lead.

PLAYOFFS? YOU'RE TALKING PLAYOFFS?… Cal State Monterey Bay finds itself right in the thick of the CCAA Tournament chase with three matches remaining in the regular season. The Otters currently rank fifth in the CCAA with 13 points. They trail Cal Poly Pomona by one point for fourth and both San Francisco State and East Bay by four points for second.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Freshman Aubrey McKessy recorded her fourth clean sheet of 2021 in Sunday's 2–0 win over Cal State L.A. That ties her with Andrea Schuitema (2001) and Diana Zambrano (2012) for No. 6 on the Otter single–season list. In case you're keeping score at home, Stephanie Busch set the CSUMB record with eight shutouts in 2018.

KEEP IT CLEAN, TEAM EDITION… Sunday's 2–0 win over Cal State L.A. was the eighth team shutout of 2021 for CSUMB. That ties the 2003 team for No. 2 on the single–season shutout list. The school record of nine came in 2018.

MAKING THEIR POINTS… With five statistical points scored (2 goals, 1 assist) in Sunday's 2–0 win over Cal State L.A., the Otters now have 65 points as a team in 2021. That passes the 2015 Otters for No. 4 on the single–season list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Mitsy Ramirez/Catalina Villegas 1; ASSISTS: Caitlyn Ferguson 1; POINTS: Mitsy Ramirez/Catalina Villegas; SHOTS: Catalina Villegas 2; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 2.

THE LAST WORD… "Great result today against a great team. We really played for the seniors and got an important result to keep us in the hunt for a CCAA tournament bid. It was a true team effort today and the team should be proud" – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin their final push for the playoffs Friday (Oct. 29) when they head south to take on Cal State San Marcos for a CCAA doubleheader. The women will kickoff at 12:30 p.m. and the men will kickoff at 3 p.m.
