Otters Earn Big Point In Draw With No. 8 L.A.

CSUMB breaks Golden Eagles’ 13–match CCAA win streak with 1–1 tie

SEASIDE, Calif. — Despite playing without several key starters, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team played No. 8 Cal State L.A. on more than even footing to earn a share of the spoils in a 1–1 draw Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (6–3–5/2–3–3 CCAA) becomes the first team to take a point from the Golden Eagles (9–2–2/7–0–1) in conference play this season. It could be an important point for the Otters as they pull to within three of Chico State and five of Humboldt State for the final CCAA Tournament positions with three matches remaining.

Steady winds that often gusted above 20 miles per hour significantly impacted play all afternoon. But the Otters made the adjustments with more regularity to nearly double Cal State L.A. in scoring chances.

CSUMB opened the scoring on the half hour when Antonio Ordoñez (Vacaville HS) pounced on the third rebound of an Otter flurry to score his third of the season. But a quick series of passes after a throw in created what turned out to be and easy answer from Lucas Rosales three minutes before halftime.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Alvaro Unaua—who played tremendously well all afternoon—tipped a venomous strike from distance by Francisco Ponce out for an Otter corner three minutes into the second overtime. It proved to be the last real threat either keeper would face.

BREAKING THE STREAK… Not only did the Otters become the first team to take a point from Cal State L.A. in CCAA play this season, they became the first team to score against L.A. since San Francisco State in the conference opener on Oct. 1. That ended the Golden Eagles shutout streak at 646 minutes.

FIT TO BE TIED… Sunday 1–1 draw with No. 8 Cal State L.A. was the fifth tie for CSUMB in 2021, breaking the school record of four, set in 2008 and 2014.

…BUT WINNERS AGAIN… With Sunday's 1–1 draw versus Cal State L.A., the Otters will be guaranteed to finish at or above .500 for the second consecutive season. They went 9–6–2 in 2019. It marks the first time in CSUMB men's soccer history the team will have accomplished that feat.

SAYONARA SENIORS… Sunday's match marked the last regular season home game for five Otter seniors: Marcus Decouto, Pedro Hernandez, Steven Moreno, Adrian Ortiz and Adrian Rebollar.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Antonio Ordoñez 1; ASSISTS: Pedro Hernandez 1; POINTS: Antonio Ordoñez 2; SHOTS: Francisco Ponce/Javier Romero 3; SAVES: Adrian Muñoz 2.

THE LAST WORD…
"We felt it was a great performance from the lads tonight. They worked really hard and scored a great goal. We were a little disappointed to go in tied at the break, but we kept playing and created opportunities in the second half and overtime. Unlucky to not get the win but a good way to celebrate a great  senior class." CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin their final push for the playoffs Friday (Oct. 29) when they head south to take on Cal State San Marcos for a CCAA doubleheader. The women will kickoff at 12:30 p.m. and the men will kickoff at 3 p.m.
