Otters Continue To Mash, Complete Battle of the Bays Sweep

CSUMB wins 15–5; finishes weekend with 46 runs and 52 hits

HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team stayed red hot Sunday, torching Pioneer pitching for 15 runs to complete a Battle of the Bays series sweep with a 15–5 win at Cal State East Bay.

The Otters ran their season–best winning streak to seven games thanks to an offense that bounced back from its first shutout of the season the previous weekend to batter East Bay with 46 runs and 52 hits in the 4–game series. The 46 runs mark just the fifth time in program history the Otters topped 40 scores in a series.

As they did in each of the previous three games in the series, the Otters jumped on top in the first inning, this time putting a five spot on the board, with Nathan Flores's Tustin/Santa Ana College) 2–run double highlighting the inning. After East Bay has scrapped back to within 6–2, CSUMB put the game away in a 9–run fourth with the Pioneers contributing five walks and two errors to the Otter rally.

Four different Otters finished the day with three hits apiece, led by senior Devin Orr (Roseville HS), whose career–high three hits included his first triple since his freshman season. Flores, Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna Union HS/College of the Redwoods) and Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) all counted doubles amongst their 3–hit performances.

On the mound, Levi Noddin (San Leandro/Chabot College) continued to look strong in his comeback season. The senior righty went five innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out three and walking none.

THE WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Charlie Nasuti's 2–run double put the cap on a 9–run fourth inning that put the Otters on top, 15–2.

LUCK NUMBER SEVEN… CSUMB ran its winning streak to a season–best seven games with Sunday's 15–5 win at Cal State East Bay. Its CSUMB's longest streak since winning eight in a row from Feb. 17–Mar. 1, 2019.

A NEAR RECORD–BREAKING SERIES… The 46 runs CSUMB scored in its weekend Battle of the Bays sweep of Cal State East Bay are the second–most runs ever scored by the Otters in a series. The record of 48 runs came in a season–ending sweep of Cal Poly Pomona Apr. 27–28, 2007.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… CSUMB's sweep of Cal State East Bay marks its second series sweep of the season — the Otters took three from Azusa Pacific in February — and its first 4–game sweep since brushing aside Cal State Dominguez Hills Mar. 29–31, 2019.

TIDE TURNS IN THE BATTLE OF THE BAYS… The Otters continued their dominance of Cal State East Bay by sweeping the Pioneers for the second consecutive season. CSUMB has won nine in a row and 12 of the last 13 against East Bay dating back to the 2017 season. CSUMB now owns a 24–20 advantage all–time in the Battle of the Bays, baseball edition.

MIGUEL KEEPS MOTORING… Freshman Brady Miguel keeps motoring along in his outstanding rookie season. He finished Sunday 1–for–5 to run his hitting streak to a personal best nine games and his reached base streak to a team season–high 17 games.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Levi Noddin (W [4–1], 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 K, 0 BB); Nathan Flores (3x5, 2B, BB, 2 R, 4 RBI); Kokko Figueiredo (3x5, BB, 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI); Kyle Guerra (3x6, SB, 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI); Devin Orr (3x4, 2 BB, 3B, R, RBI).

THE LAST WORD… "We were able to jump out early today by putting together some really good at bats. We had big hits and big contributions throughout the lineup leading to a couple big innings. With the lead, Levi Noddin threw well once again. Levi knows how to compete and he really knows how to pitch. We know he is going to give us a chance to win, which instills confidence throughout the roster. We used all 28 guys on the active roster this weekend. Each and every guy contributed in some fashion. This truly was a total team effort. We will enjoy it during the bus ride home, but we need to move on to our next challenge at San Marcos next weekend." — CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head south to begin a 4–game series at Cal State San Marcos Friday (Mar. 13). first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
