Otters Earn Extra–Innings Battle of the Bays Win, 7–4

CSUMB scores three times in the 10th to take series opener

HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay scored three time in the top of the 10th inning to break a 4–4 tie and earn a 7–4 win to open its Battle of the Bay series with Cal State East Bay Friday at the Pioneer Baseball Field.

CSUMB scored all three runs with Hunter Harris's (Newark Memorial HS/Chabot College) infield single the only knock in the rally. The Otters benefited when East Bay misplayed a pair of sacrifice attempts following Jacob Martin's (Bloomington HS/Chaffey College) leadoff walk.

Kokko Figueiredo's (Fortuna Union HS) RBI double in the first was the lone extra–base hit for CSUMB Friday. The Otters also got a run–scoring single from Cooper Smith (Salinas HS/Cabrillo College) and two from Brady Miguel (San Benito HS).

CSUMB's other runs all came with the help of Pioneer miscues in the 10th.

CSUMB's closer combo of Connor Fabing (San Benito HS) and Parker Fokken (Paloma Valley HS/Chaffey College) put the cap on a strong bullpen effort that held East Bay to three hits and one run over 5 1/3 innings. Fabing pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his second win of 2020. Fokken threw a scoreless 10th for his third save in as many appearances.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Keith Hale's sacrifice fly put the finishing touches on a 3–run Otter 10th that broke a 4–4 tie.

FOR OPENERS… The Otters won the opening game of a conference series for the first time in four tries this season. .

WORKING OVERTIME… Friday's win was CSUMB's first extra–inning victory of 2020 in its first extra–innings game. It's the first time the Otters have won an extra–inning affair since taking a 6–5 decision from Stanislaus State on Mar. 8, 2019.

FOUR OF A KIND… Friday's 7–4 win at East Bay was the fourth consecutive win for CSUMB. It's the longest Otter streak of the season and their longest since winning five straight from Apr. 27–May 9, 2019.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Cabrillo College transfer Cooper Smith picked up his first Otter hit with an RBI single in the first inning of Friday's 7–4 win at Cal State East Bay. He also made his first NCAA start in the game.
