Another Gasper Gem Leads Otters To Split With No. 14 UCSD

Cassie Gasper tosses a 1–hit shutout, Gabby Forbes goes 6–for–7 at the plate

SEASIDE, Calif. — Fans wondering what Cal State Monterey Bay junior ace Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) would do for an encore after Friday's 3–hit shutout of No. 14 UC San Diego were in for a treat Saturday afternoon. Gasper 1–hit the Tritons in another shutout performance to lead CSUMB to another doubleheader split at the Otter Sports Complex.

UCSD took Game 1 8–3. The Otters rebounded for an 8–0, run–rule win in the nightcap.

Gasper fanned six in five innings. The only thing between her and a no–hitter was a leadoff single by Sherriah Harrington in the fourth inning.

Jamie Sugimoto's (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) RBI single in the first inning gave Gasper all the support she would need. Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) hit a bases–clearing double to highlight a 6–run Otter third inning. Korina Krueg (Tokay HS/Cosumnes River College) sent everyone home early when her 2–out, bases–loaded rip down the left field line plated Jessica Cross (Simi Valley HS) with marker that ended the game via the run rule.

The Otters out–hit the Tritons 19–7 for the day. Junior Gabrielle Forbes (San Jose/Presentation HS) led the hit parade by going 6–for–7 with a double. Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacific HS) also hit safely in both games, going 3–for–7 with her second home run of the season.
 

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… After Alyssa Burt's home run trimmed UCSD's lead to 3–2 in the third inning, UCSD took advantage of two walks, a hit batter and an error to plate four in the fourth inning and take a commanding 7–2 lead.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Jamie Sugimoto's RBI single in the first plated Jessica Cross with the only run the Otters would need behind Cassie Gasper's dominating effort.

GASPER IS A O–KKKKKKKKKK…With six strikeouts in five innings Saturday, Cassie Gasper increased her lead in the CCAA strikeout race, lifting her season total. Her 74 total strikeouts are 12 better than any other CCAA pitcher.

FEIN CLOSING ON CLARKSON… With five strikeouts Saturday versus UC San Diego, Hayley Fein climbed to within five strikeouts of Lindsey Clarkson (423) on the CSUMB career Ks list. Fein is also nearing No. 2 Cori Reinhardt (445) as she eyes Jessica Boyle's school record of 466.

FEIN WITH THE STICK… With her 3–run double in the Game 2 win Saturday over UC San Diego, Hayley Fein moved up to the No. 3 spot in the CCAA with 18 RBI so far in 2020.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head north on Highway 101 for a 4–game series at Sonoma State next Friday and Saturday. The action kicks off with a noon doubleheader on Mar. 6.
