Otters Drop Pair Of Pitcher’s Duels At Sonoma State

Cassie Gasper takes a no–hitter into the sixth inning of Game 1

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — It was a tough luck Friday for the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team as the Otters couldn't take advantage of a pair of strong pitching performances, dropping a doubleheader to Sonoma State 1–0 and 4–0 at Seawolf Field.

Junior Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) deserved much but than the result she got in the opener. Gasper took a no–hitter into the sixth inning and eventually absorbed the loss when the Otters made a 2–out error in the bottom of the seventh.

Gasper fanned six and allowed just three hits — all singles — in Game 1. Jessica Cross's (Simi Valley HS) infield single leading off the fourth was the only base runner for CSUMB.

In the nightcap, senior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) rallied after allowing a first inning home run to strike out eight while scattering three hits over the final six innings. But the Otter offense struggled again, this time managing just four base runners — all via singles.

With her eight punch outs Friday, Fein raised her career total to 438 and moved to within eight of passing Cori Reinhardt for the No. 2 spot on the Otter all–time list. Jessica Boyle owns the CSUMB record with 466 Ks from 2006–09.

CSUMB and Sonoma State will conclude their 4–game series (weather permitting) with a doubleheader Saturday at Seawolf Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
