Gasper’s Gem Leads Otters To Split With No. 14 UCSD

Cassie Gasper throws her second 3–hit shutout in seven days

SEASIDE, Calif. — Junior hurler Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) threw her second 3–hit shutout in seven days Friday night, blanking No. 14 UC San Diego 3–0 to help Cal State Monterey Bay earn a split of its series–opening doubleheader at the Otter Sports Complex.

UCSD took advantage of five unearned runs to take the opener, 8–0, in five innings.

Gasper was in nearly complete control Friday, striking out 10 batters for the third time this season. She faced just one hiccough, when a pair of walks and a field's choice allowed the Tritons to load the bases with one out in the sixth. But she got a key strikeout and two harmless ground balls to escape with no damage.

For their part, the Otters broke through without a hit in the third when Nikki Jones (Cordova HS) drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a Korina Krueg (Tokay HS) sacrifice before eventually scoring on a wild pitch. Jessilyn Barrow (Folsom HS) added a clutch 2–out, 2–run single in the bottom of the sixth to provide Gasper with insurance she ultimately wouldn't need.

In the opener, UCSD scratched its way to a 3–0 lead through four innings. But a pair of Otter throwing errors opened the floodgates to five unearned runs in the fifth, allowing UCSD to end the game via run–rule.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… UCSD scored five unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning to take an 8–0 lead. UCSD starter Robyn Wampler allowed just one Otter hit — a third inning double by Jamie Sugimoto — to make that lead stand up.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Cassie Gasper coaxed a 1–hopper to third off the bat of Sophia Real to end a bases loaded threat in the sixth inning.

THREE 10s SOUNDS LIKE A WINNING HAND… With 10 punchouts Friday versus UC San Diego, Cassie Gasper joined Diane Ortiz (2010) as the only Otter pitchers to strike out 10 or more batters three times in a single season. Gasper also fanned 10 in consecutive starts against Menlo College (Feb. 2) and at Chico State (Feb. 7).

HANGING 10 FOR THE RECORD… For those keeping score at home, Lindsey Clarkson (2013–16) owns the Otter career record for 10–plus strikeout games with seven.

FEIN CLOSING ON CLARKSON… With three strikeouts in Friday's opener versus UC San Diego, Hayley Fein climbed to within 10 strikeouts of Lindsey Clarkson (423) on the CSUMB career Ks list. Fein is also nearing No. 2 Cori Reinhardt (445) as she eyes Jessica Boyle's school record of 466.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set against UCSD with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at the Otter Sports Complex.
