Bats Come Alive As Otters Earn Another Doubleheader Split

East Bay rallies to take Game 1, 4–3, before Otters win nightcap 11–5

HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay bats exploded for 14 hits in the nightcap to earn a doubleheader split with Cal State East Bay for the second consecutive afternoon at Pioneer Field.

East Bay scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to take Saturday's opener, 4–3, before the Otters earned an 11–5 win in Game 2.

Junior Cassie Gasper threw two innings of perfect relief before consecutive 1–out doubles in the bottom of the seventh allowed East Bay to sneak away with the 4–3 win. The Otters then spotted the Pioneers leads of 3–2 and 5–3 before pouring on eight unanswered runs to secure the split.

Despite CSUMB totalling 20 hits in the twinbill, Kassidy Pilpil and Korina Krueg were the only Otters to hit safely in both games. Pilpil finished the day 3–for–6 while Krueg went 3–for–7 with a home run and a pair of stolen bases.

Hayley Fein struck out six in six innings of relief to earn the Game 2 win for CSUMB. She got the start in Game 1 and allowed just one earned run but did not factor in the decision.

CSUMB returns home to host UC San Diego for a 4–game series Feb. 28–29 at the Otter Sports Complex.
