Otters Open Battle of the Bays Series With Split

Cassie Gasper’s 3–hit shutout gives Otters 1–0 win in the nightcap

HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay began their annual Battle of the Bays softball series by splitting a pair of well–pitched games Friday afternoon at Pioneer Field. East Bay scored two late runs to pull out a 3–2 win in the opener before Cassie Gasper (Merced HS/Univ. of Missouri) twirled a 3–hit shutout in CSUMB's 1–0 Game 2 win.

Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) not only pitched well enough to win the opener, she hit her team–leading third home run of the season to boot. But the Otters managed to parlay 11 base runners into just two runs. East Bay, meanwhile, scored a pair of runs on just two hits in the fifth inning to earn the come–from–behind win.

Gasper was in complete control in the nightcap. Not only did she limit the Pioneers to three hits, she allowed just two runners to reach second base. She fanned seven and walked three in earning her fifth victory of the young season.

Senior catcher Michaela Decker (Christopher HS/Cabrillo College) made Gasper a winner with an RBI single in the seventh that broke the scoreless tie.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Alyssa Burt flied out to left field for the final out as the potential go–ahead run.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Michaela Decker singled through the left side to plate what proved to be the game's lone run. With Cassie Gasper in complete control, that was all the Otters needed.

FEIN CLOSING ON CLARKSON… With four punchouts Friday at Cal State East Bay, Hayley Fein moved to within nine strikeouts of Lindsey Clarkson (2013–16) for the No. 3 spot on the Otter career strikeout list. Fein will enter play Saturday with 414 career Ks. Jessica Boyle (2006–09) owns the Otter record with 466 strikeouts.

KEEP IT CLEAN… The Otters handled 55 chances cleanly in Friday's doubleheader at Cal State East Bay, marking the first time in 2020 they have put together consecutive errorless games. In fact, it's the first time the Otters have played an error–free doubleheader since Apr. 19, 2019 when they handled 55 chances cleanly in a sweep of Sonoma State.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Cassie Gasper (W [5–2], 7.0 IP, ShO, 3 H, 7 K, 3 BB); Hayley Fein (1x4, HR [3], BB, R, RBI); Michaela Decker (2x5, BB, RBI); Alyssa Burt (3x6, 3B).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set Hayward with a doubleheader against the Pioneers starting Saturday at noon.
