Chico Pitching Quiets Otter Bats In Series Opener

Brady Miguel drives in lone Otter run in 5–1 defeat

SEASIDE, Calif. — Chico State starter Grant Larson allowed just one run over 6 1/3 innings to negate a strong start by Otter senior Ethan McRae (Fresno CC) as the Wildcats took a 5–1 victory to open a 4–game series Friday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Larson scattered six hits and a trio of Chico relievers yielded just one walk to silence the normally potent Otter bats. That was enough to pin a hard–luck loss on McRae, who allowed just two earned runs over six strong innings.

Chico took an early lead by scoring single runs in the first and fourth innings. Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) got one of the those back with a 2–out, RBI single in the Otter fourth. But the Otters managed to get just one more runner into scoring position over the final five frames as Chico eased away.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Grant Larson stranded a pair of Otters in the sixth inning with the Wildcats clinging to a 3–1 lead. It proved to be the last time CSUMB would advance a runner into scoring position.

STREAKING… By going 1–for–4 Friday against Chico State, Kokko Figueiredo is the lone Otter to reach safely in all 11 games to start the 2020 campaign. Chase Lindemann saw his streak end at 10 games after going 0–for–3.

STREAKING, PART II… After going hitless in the opener, Kyle Dean ran his current hitting streak to 10 games with a fifth–inning single Friday. It is the second–longest streak of his career, trailing only a 19–game run from Apr. 12 – May 16, 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Brady Miguel (2x4, RBI); Kyle Guerra (1x3, R, BB, SB).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game series against Chico State with a doubleheader Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
