Otters Stay Alive In CCAA Race With 88–76 Win

Otters move to within one–half game of CCAA Tournament with three games to play

SEASIDE, Calif. — In a game it absolutely had to have, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team led wire–to–wire to earn an 88–76 victory over fellow CCAA tournament hopeful Cal State San Marcos Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

With the win, the Otters move to within one–half game of San Marcos for the eighth and final CCAA Tournament bid. They are one game behind Cal State Dominguez Hills for seventh place with three games remaining.

Sophomore forward Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Aust./Univ. of San Diego) led five Otters in double figures with 18 points. Damian Wilson  (Inglewood/Taft HS) added 16 off the bench. Joseph Bosetti (Red Bluff HS) just missed his first double–double of the season, finishing with nine points and a game–high 10 rebounds.

It took the Otters less than five minutes to open their first double–digit lead at 15–11. The lead stayed in double figures for almost all of the balance of the game until a late Cougar run briefly got them to within eight in the final three minutes.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Damian Wilson made the first of two free throws to push the Otter lead to 86–75 with 37 seconds remaining.

ON THE BLOCKS… The Otters blocked a season–high eight Cougar shots in Thursday's 88–76 win over Cal State San Marcos. That mark ranks No. 3 on the CSUMB list for most blocks in a game. The were the most blocks by an Otter team since they blocked a school record 12 at — coincidentally — Cal State San Marcos on Jan. 9, 2016.

AN OTTER HIGH FIVE… The Otters put a season–high five scorers in double figures in Thursday's 88–76 win over Cal State San Marcos. Andrew Ferguson led the way with 18 points. Joining him were Damian Wilson (16), Jahvon Johnson (14), Tommy Kramer (11) and Charlie Tooley (10).

JOHNSON PASSES 1,200 POINT MARK… With 14 points in Thursday's 88–76 win over Cal State San Marcos, Jahvon Johnson became the third player in CSUMB history to pass the 1,200 career point mark (1,211). He needs 21 points over the final three games of the regular season to pass Brandon Ward (2010–13) for No. 2 on the CSUMB career scoring list. Alex Fertig (2013–16) owns the CSUMB record with 1,370 points.

START ME UP… Jahvon Johnson made his 98th career start in Thursday's 88–76 win over Cal State San Marcos, tying the Otter record first set by Brandon Ward (2010–13).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Andrew Ferguson 18; REBOUNDS: Joseph Bosetti 10; ASSISTS: Charlie Tooley 6; BLOCKS: Andrew Ferguson/Tommy Kramer/Damian Wilson 2; STEALS: Damian Wilson 3.

THE LAST WORD… "What our guys did tonight in terms of energy, effort and teamwork was as good as I can remember in our three years at CSUMB.  We could have made more shots or had better positioning defensively here and there but, I can't question their heart or togetherness at all and that's big time for us." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will host nationally–ranked UC San Diego in their final home game of the 2019–20 season. The men will tip-off at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
