Otters Win Wild Doubleheader to Complete Sweep Of Jacks

CSUMB wins 9–8, 15–9 to take 4–game series from Humboldt State

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay completed a series sweep of visiting Humboldt State with a wild doubleheader sweep of the Lumberjacks Saturday afternoon and evening at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters held off Humboldt rallies in both games to win 9–8 and 15–9.

CSUMB counted 10 extra–base hits amongst its 22 total hits in the doubleheader. Humboldt added six extra–base hits.

Jamie Sugimoto (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) and Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) swung the biggest bats. Sugimoto finished the day with three doubles, a home run and five RBI. Fein added two doubles, a home run and seven RBI of her own.

The Otters jumped to big leads in both games. They scored four runs in the first inning and led the opener 8–1 after four. But Humboldt rallied with a 7–run fifth inning to tie the game.

Fein came up with the biggest hit of the game by looping a 2–out single down the right field line to break the tie in the Otter half of the fifth. Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) pitched two innings of hitless relief to make the lead stand up while earning her first save.

CSUMB exploded for 12 runs in the first inning of the nightcap. A bases–clearing, pinch–hit double by Nadya Orozco (West Covina HS/UTEP) and a 3–run homer by Fein accounted for the final six runs.

Humboldt put three spots on the board in the third fourth and fifth inning as it clawed its way back to prevent a run–rule win by the Otters. An RBI double from Fein and a 2–run bomb from Michaela Decker (Gilroy/Cabrillo College) gave CSUMB a bit more breathing room before Ellie Bauer San Rafael HS) pitched two scoreless frames to seal the win..

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Cassie Gasper retired the final five Lumberjacks in a row to preserve the 9–8 Otter victory.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Ellie Bauer entered to start the sixth inning. She threw two innings of 1–hit relief to quell Humboldt's final comeback attempt.

AN OTTER'S DOZEN… With a 12–run outburst in the first inning of Game 2 Saturday, the Otters plated double–digit runs in a frame for just the third time in program history. The last time they did it, they scored 10 as part of a 16–9 win over Sonoma State on Apr. 4, 2015. The 2012 Otters set the record with a 13–run first inning in a 14–0 win over Cal State San Bernardino on Feb. 24, 2012.

OTTER BATS POST HISTORIC TOTALS… CSUMB exploded for 39 runs in the 4–game sweep of Humboldt State. That total ranks No. 3 all time on the Otter list for runs in a series. The Otters set the record of 43 runs in a 4–game set at, yup, Humboldt State on Apr. 11–12, 2011. This series marked the 12th time in Otter history that they have scored 30 or more runs in a series.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Britney Lopez pitched two–thirds of an inning of relief to earn her first collegiate victory in Game 1 Saturday.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the other Bay area for their annual Battle of the Bays series at Cal State East Bay Feb. 21–22. The action kicks off with a twinbill on Friday starting at noon.
