Late Cold Spell Proves Lethal in Loss To East Bay

Jahvon Johnson scores 18, grabs career–high eight rebounds in 69–66 defeat

SEASIDE, Calif. — A late cold spell proved lethal to Cal State Monterey Bay as visiting Cal State East Bay rallied late to take a 69–66 decision Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Senior Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) led CSUMB with 18 points and a career–high eight rebounds. Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Australia) just missed his third double–double of the season, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds.

CSUMB led for almost the entire game and still held a 64–58 lead with just over six minutes remaining when the offense went cold. The Otters posted eight consecutive empty possessions over the ensuing five minutes but played good enough defense to stay within a point after Ferguson made a pair of free throws to bring the Otters to within 67–66 with just over a minute remaining.

Another stop gave them the chance to take the lead inside the final minute, but a crucial turnover robbed them of the opportunity. CSUMB still had a chance to tie with the game's final possession, but Ferguson's 3–point attempt wouldn't fall.

CSUMB returns to action next weekend when its hosts its final home games of the 2019–20 season. The action begins Thursday (Feb. 21) with a visit by Cal State San Marcos. Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
