Otters Pound 29 Hits In Twinbill Split at Cal State L.A.

Brady Miguel hits first collegiate homer; Charlie Nasuti ties MB record with five hits in one game

LOS ANGELES — Cal State Monterey Bay pounded out 29 hits — including 22 in the opener — to earn a doubleheader split with Cal State L.A. Saturday afternoon at Reeder Field. CSUMB took the opener 13–1 before falling 8–4 in the nightcap.

Greg Steinbeck (San Benito HS), the reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week, was masterful again in winning the opener. He struck out six Golden Eagles while pitching six innings of 4–hit, shutout ball to earn the win.
Cal State L.A. rebounded to win Game 2 by scoring eight runs over the first three innings to overcome and early Otter lead.

Right fielder Kyle Dean (San Diego/BYU) starred at the plate for CSUMB. The senior collected a pair of hits in each game, finishing the afternoon 4–for–6 with two doubles, three runs, three RBI and a stolen base.

Freshman Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) also had a strong day at the plate with three hits, four runs and his first collegiate home run in Game 1. Junior outfielder Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) finished the day with six hits and a double. Purdue transfer Charlie Nasuti (Saint John Bosco HS) had a CSUMB record–tying five hits in the opener, including a pair of doubles.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Charlie Nasuti's  RBI double capped a 3–run Otter second, giving CSUMB a 7–0 lead. With Greg Steinbeck in complete control, the Golden Eagles never sniffed a comeback.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Cal State L.A. scored three times in the third to break open what was a 5–4 game. The Otters never got the tying run to the plate over the final four innings.

THE OTTER HIT PARADE… Led by Charlie Nasuti's high five, the Otters claimed 22 hits in Saturday's Game 1 win at Cal State L.A. That ties for No. 3 on the CSUMB list for hits in a game and matches the 22 hits the Otters pounded in a 20–2 win over Azusa Pacific on Feb. 8.

GRAND MARSHAL OF THE HIT PARADE… Charlie Nasuti's five hits Saturday not only were a career high, they matched the CSUMB record for hits in a game. He is the sixth Otter to collect five hits in one game and the first since TJ Dove went 5–for–7 in a win over Chico State on Mar. 9, 2018.

20–20 VISION… Including the aforementioned 22–hit game against Azusa Pacific, the Otters have two 20–plus hit games in the same season for just the second time in program history. The only other time they turned the trick was in 2016, when they had 22 hits in a 15–5 win at Cal State San Marcos (Apr. 30, 2016) and 20 hits in a 23–6 win at Cal Poly Pomona (Apr. 3, 2016).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game series at Cal State L.A. with a single game Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
