Otters Return To Winning Ways With Sweep Of Humboldt

Hayley Fein, jamie Sugimoto have big nights in 9–7, 6–2 victories

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay softball bounced back into the win column in a big way by sweeping a CCAA doubleheader from Humboldt State, 9–7 and 6–2, Friday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Senior Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) starred for CSUMB. She scattered six hits in a complete–game victory in the nightcap while going 3–for–6 with a double and four RBI at the plate in the twinbill. Junior Jamie Sugimoto (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) swung the biggest bat though, hitting a double and her first home run of the season.

The Otters never trailed in either game, but they did have to outlast Humboldt in a two hour and 52 minute marathon that was one of the longest 7–inning games in CSUMB history. The Otters jumped to a 5–1 lead before Humboldt scored four in the fifth inning to tie the game.

Sugimoto untied it in the CSUMB half of the fifth with a laser beam 2–run shot to straightaway center. Fein added some much–needed insurance with a 2–run double in the Otter sixth.

Fein's 2–run single in the first inning of the nightcap staked the Otters to a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Humboldt pulled to within 3–2 in the fourth inning before an RBI knock from Savanna Salyer Kovacs (Camarillo HS) and a 2–run, pinch–hit double by Nadya Orozco (West Covina HS/UTEP) provided Fein with some superfluous insurance.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Cassie Gasper coaxed a grounder to third from Adriana Chavez to strand the potential tying runs and end the game.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Nadya Orozco's 2–run, pinch–hit double gave the Otters a 4–run cushion entering the final frame.

THE FEIN 400… With eight strikeouts in Friday's win over Humboldt State, Hayley Fein became the fourth pitcher in Otter history to surpass 400 career strikeouts (407). She needs 17 more to pass Lindsey Clarkson (2013–16) for No. 3 on the Otter list.

A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN I… The Otters have been downright lethal when playing their league openers at the Otter Sports Complex. With Friday's 9–7 win over Humboldt State in Game 1, the Otters improved to 11–2 all–time when playing their first home CCAA game of the season.

A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN II… Including Friday's two wins over Humboldt State, the Otters are now 30–16 in their CCAA home–opening series at the Otter Sports Complex.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Hayley Fein (W [3–2], 7.0 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 8 K, 3 BB; 3x6, 2B, 4 RBI)); Jamie Sugimoto (2x5, 2B, HR [1], R, 2 RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set versus Humboldt State with a doubleheader starting Saturday at 11 a.m.
