Otters Open New Year With Loss At UC San Diego

Charlie Tooley leads with 17 points in 94–72 defeat

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay came out of the gate hotter, but host UC San Diego came out even hotter to pull away for a 94–72 win Thursday night in RIMAC Arena.

CSUMB was shooting 52 percent from the floor through the first 10 minutes. The problem was, UCSD connected on 74 percent over that same span, easing away to an 18–point, 52–34, halftime lead.

Both teams cooled off considerably in the second half, but UCSD never gave the Otters an opening and the lead hovered around the final margin for the remaining 20 minutes.

Senior guard Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS) made his first start of the season and lead the Otters with 17 points. Sophomore center Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Aust./USD) made his first collegiate start and added 12 points.

The Otters conclude their brief trip to America's finest City with a doubleheader Saturday at Cal State San Marcos. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. while the men are slated for a 3 p.m. tip.
