Second Half Rally Comes Up Short In Loss At San Marcos

Andre Ferguson leads four in double figures with 21 points in 91–79 defeat

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay rallied from 22 points down in the second half but couldn't quite complete the comeback as Cal State San Marcos held on late for a 91–79 win Saturday in the CSUSM Sports Center.

Junior guard Andre Ferguson (Los Angeles/Howard College) led four Otters in double figures with 21 points. Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) added 17 points and a season–high five assists. Senior guard Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS) came off the bench to pull down a career–high eight rebounds.

After falling behind 56–34, the Otters fought back, giving themselves multiple opportunities to make it a one possession game. CSUMB had two consecutive possessions erase the deficit inside the final three minutes, but a turnover and a missed 3–pointer stalled the rally before San Marcos scored six in the final minute to ice the game.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a Blake Seits layup made it 89–79 San Marcos with 26 seconds remaining.

JAHVON PASSES DAHLHAMER… With 17 points Saturday at Cal State San Marcos, Jahvon Johnson moved past Matt Dahlhamer (1999–01) and into third place on the Otter career scoring list with 1,082. If he maintains his current pace, he will end his career as the No. 2 scorer in CSUMB history.

QUADRUPLE DOUBLE FIGURES… Led by a career–high 21 points from Andre Ferguson, the Otters placed four scorers in double figures for the first time this season. Joining Ferguson were Jahvon Johnson (17 points), Andrew Ferguson (11 points) and J.R. Schilling (10 points). It's the first time that has happened for CSUMB since Joseph Bosetti, Koen Sapwell, Charlie Tooley and Jared Williams all did it at Cal State L.A. on Feb. 9, 2019.

OTTERS HOT FROM THE STRIPE… The Otters were sizzling from the free–throw line Saturday in San Marcos, making 20–of–23 attempts (87.0 pct.). That percentage was not only a season–high, it marks the second highest percentage in Otter history (min. 20 attempts). In case you're wondering, the record of 95.0 pct. (19–of–20) came against Humboldt State on Jan. 28, 2017.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Andre Ferguson 21; REBOUNDS: Charlie Tooley 8; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson 5; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Five Otters 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 3–game trip to kickoff 2020 by heading to Hayward for the first leg of the Battle of the Bays. Doubleheader action begins with the women's game at 1 p.m. The men will tip–off at 3 p.m.
