Otters Lose A Heart–Breaker As Final Shot Doesn’t Fall

Jahvon Johnson scores 18, Adrew Ferguson has double–double in 74–72 loss to SFSU

SEASIDE, Calif. — It all came down to one shot when Cal State Monterey Bay hosted San Francisco State Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed. Unfortunately for Otter fans, the final shot didn't fall as visiting San Francisco State escaped with a 74–72 victory.

Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) led CSUMB with a game–high 18 points. Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Australia) added 17 points and a game–high 14 rebounds.

Both teams scrambled to get back into this seesaw affair. San Francisco State trailed by 16 points late in the first half. The Otters fell behind by nine in the final three minutes of the second.

CSUMB rallied to tie thanks to three consecutive 3–pointers, the final one by J.R. Schilling (Lake Oswego [Ore.] HS) tying the game at 72–72 with 1:29 to play. Each team got a stop before a Linton Acliese layup broke the tie for the Gators with 20 seconds remaining.

CSUMB went for the win on its final possession, but Ferguson's three from the corner wouldn't fall.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN…Charlie Tooley's desperation heave from well beyond half court caromed off the backboard as the final buzzer sounded.

ANOTHER BIG GAME FOR THE BIG GUY… Andrew Ferguson continues to make a major impact for the Otters. The sophomore center recorded his second double–double in the last three games with 17 points and 14 rebounds Saturday versus San Francisco State. Ferguson is averaging 17.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game in his six Otter appearances.

ANOTHER MILESTONE FOR JAHVON… Jahvon Johnson reached another scoring milestone with his 18–point performance Saturday versus San Francisco State. Johnson went over the 1,100–point mark (1,111), becoming the third Otter ever the reach that level. If he finishes the season at his current pace, he will pass Brandon Ward (2010–13) to become CSUMB No. 2 all–time leading scorer.

CRAZY EIGHT… Tommy Kramer passed a team season–high and personal record eight assists Saturday versus San Francisco State. He is the first Otter to pass eight or more assists since Charlie Tooley passed nine in a win over Cal State San Bernardino on Feb. 2, 2019.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK… The Otter continue to grow more comfortable in their offense. They passed as many or more assists (13) than they had turnovers (12) for the fourth time in their last five games.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jahvon Johnson 18; REBOUNDS: Andrew Ferguson 14; ASSISTS: Tommy Kramer 8; BLOCKS: Jahvon Johnson 1; STEALS: Joseph Bosetti/Jahvon Johnson/Tommy Kramer 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for their (geographically) longest trip of the season next weekend. The 2–game swing begins Thursday (Jan. 23) at Stanislaus State. The men will tip–off at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
