Ferguson Explodes For 34 Points As Otters Tame Seawolves

Andrew Ferguson scores the most points by an Otters since 2011

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay sophomore center Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Australia) continued the absolutely torrid start to his Otter career by torching visiting Sonoma State for 34 points in an 83–63 Otter win Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

He is the first Otter to score 30 or more points in a game since Ryan Nitz scored 33 against Cal State East Bay in 2016. Ferguson did his damage by going 11–for–15 from the floor, 6–of–8 from 3–point range, and 6–of–7 from the line. He added a team–high seven rebounds for good measure.

The Otters also got a nice all–around game from junior Damian Wilson (Inglewood/Moorpark College), who added seven rebounds and a game–high five assists to a 13–point night. Tommy Kramer and Mike Johnson also reached double figures with 11 points each.

Sonoma made the game's first bucket, but that proved to be the last lead the Seawolves would hold in this one. CSUMB built its first double–digit lead at 23–13 on a Kramer 3–ball with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half.

The Seawolves closed to within five at 34–29 early in the second half, but the Otters responded with a 16–2 run that blew the game open. Sonoma never got within single digits of the lead again.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Andrew Ferguson knocked down his sixth 3–pointer of the night to give the Otters a 77–60 lead with 2:40 remaining.

AN HISTORIC NIGHT FOR FERGUSON… Andrew Ferguson's 34–point night ranks No. 6 on the Otter all–time list for points in a game. No Otter has scored more points since Davion Berry scored 35 at Cal State Stanislaus on Jan. 21, 2011. In case you're wondering, Richard Jenkins owns the CSUMB  single–game scoring record with 57 points against Western Oregon on Dec. 15, 2006.

FERGUSON IN EXCLUSIVE COMING… Andrew Ferguson's 34 points are the most scored by a CCAA player this season. It matches the 34–point output by UCSD's Christian Oshita at Cal State San Bernardino on Nov. 24.

WE LOVE THE 80s: The 80s have been incredibly friendly territory for the Otters in recent history. With its 83–63 win over Sonoma State Thursday night, CSUMB owns a 47–9 (.839) mark in its last 56 games when scoring at least 80 in regulation games dating to the 2007–08 season.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST… Thursday's win over Sonoma State was as much about defense as offense. Sonoma's 63 points were the fewest allowed by the Otters since they held Cal State Dominguez Hills to 54 in a 55–54 win on Nov. 18, 2017.

DEFENSE BY THE HALF… The 24 points CSUMB allowed Sonoma in the first half are the fewest in a first half since it held Cal Poly Pomona to 20 points on Jan. 27, 2017. They are the fewest allowed in any half since limiting Dominguez Hills to 18 points in the second half of the Otter win on Nov. 18, 2017.

FROM DOWNTOWN: After making 15 more from beyond the arc against Sonoma State, the Otters are on pace to make school record 263 3–pointers in 2019–20. The Otters have made 629 3–pointers in two–plus seasons under Isaac Williams, including a record 254 in 2017–18.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Andrew Ferguson 34; REBOUNDS: Andrew Ferguson/Damian Wilson 7; ASSISTS: Damian Wilson 5; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Ben Carter/Andre Ferguson/Jahvon Johnson 1.

THE LAST WORD… "It's nice to see these guys compete, succeed, smile and just have fun, all together as a team. I'm looking forward to seeing where this group goes from here." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will wrap up their brief 2–game homestand by hosting San Francisco State Saturday afternoon. The men will tip-off at 3 p.m. as the second game of men's/women's doubleheader.
