Otters Dominate Dominican But Have To Rally To Win

Adrian Rebollar, Luis Lopez and Walmer Martinez score in a 3–2 winat Dominican

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Visiting Cal State Monterey Bay dominated on the stat sheet but just squeaked by on the scoreboard to earn a 3–2 win over Dominican University Sunday evening at Kennelly Field.

CSUMB improved to 2–0 for the just the fourth time in program history and the first time since 2015. Despite huge advantages in terms of possessions and shots, however, the Otters had to rally twice to earn the win.

Senior Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) netted his second winner in as many matches, scoring in the 74th minute off a perfect free kick feed from Rebollar to break a 2–2 tie. Adrian Rebollar (Watsonville HS) and Luis Lopez (De Anza HS) each added his first score of 2019. Rebollar also assisted on the Lopez and Martinez goals.

CSUMB out–shot Dominican 25–9 for the match, including a 12–3 edge in the first half. Despite the constant one way traffic, Dominican capitalized on its two scoring chances to put the Otters behind twice inside the first half hour.

The Otters yielded a goal 38 seconds after kickoff and another against the run of play on a corner midway through the first half. But they rallied to tie the game twice. Rebollar created a turnover at the top of the Penguin box to score in the sixth minute while Lopez tied the match 40 seconds before the half off a corner kick.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Roberto Garcia's free kick from just outside the Otter box sailed wide in the 89th minute.

TWO AND OH, PART I… The Otters are off to a 2–0 start for just the fourth time ever and the first time since 2015. CSUMB's best–ever start of 4–0 came during the 2013 season.

TWO AND OH, PART II… The Otter women also are 2–0, marking the first time in Otter soccer history that both teams opened 2–0 in the same season.

LENDING A HAND…UMM…FOOT… By assisting on the final two goals, Adrian Rebollar became the 15th player in Otter history to record two assists in a match. The last player to do it was Walmer Martinez against Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 21, 2018.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Luis Lopez/Walmer Martinez/Adrian Rebollar 1; ASSISTS: Adrian Rebollar 2; POINTS: Adrian Rebollar 4; SHOTS: Luis Lopez 7; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 2.

THE LAST WORD… "The lads showed real character today after going a goal down. We created a lot of chances and played some really good stuff. It was a good weekend going 2–0 and we will get back to work on Tuesday in preparation for Friday's game." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to Seaside to host the University of Texas–Permian Basin for their 2019 home opener Friday, Sept. 13 at the Otter Sports Complex. Get your tickets in advance at OtterAthletics.com/Tickets or watch CCAA Sports Network at OtterAthletics.com/watch.
