Lopez Scores Two, Jonsson Has Shutout In Win Over UTPB

Luis Lopez scores twice in the second half of 2–0 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Senior Luis Lopez (Martinez/De Anza College) scored two goals to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a 2–0 win over the University Texas–Permian Basin Friday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters (3–0–0 overall) first took the lead in the 63rd minute with Lopez's second of the season, assisted by Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) and Josh Marquez (San Jose/Bellarmine Prep). They sealed the deal with yet another Lopez goal, this one assisted by Adrian Rebollar (Watsonville HS), in the 89th minute of the game.

Junior Rasmus Jonsson, a Swedish transfer from Central Arkansas, recorded his first collegiate shut out in his first start as an Otter.

The Falcons tried to battle back and created a couple of quality scoring chances, but finished with just three shots in the game. CSUMB out shot the Falcons 19–3 .

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Luis Lopez beat an offside trap near midfield and sprinted in alone on Falcon goalkeeper Alfonso Aragon to bury his second of the match in the 89th minute.

BRACE YOURSELVES… There has been only one hat trick in CSUMB men's (by Adam Volodor versus Cal State East Bay in 2016). with his brace Friday night, Luis Lopez became the 20th player in Otter history to score two goals in a match.

MULTIPLE BRACES… Friday's brace was the second for Luis Lopez as an Otter. He joins Kyle Millerick (3), Kyle Satow (2) and Nick Torricelli (2) as Otters who have scored two goals in a match multiple times.

STARTING OFF HOT… The Otter are off to just the fourth 3–0–0 start in program history and the first since 2013. They will try to match the 4–0–0 start of the 2013 squad which is the best in program history.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Luis Lopez 2; ASSISTS: Walmer Martinez/Adrian Rebollar 1; POINTS: Luis Lopez 2; SHOTS: Luis Lopez 5; SAVES: Rasmus Jonsson 2.

THE LAST WORD… "We played on the front foot from the first whistle to the last. The exciting thing is that we are creating chances and working for each other." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to The City to face Pac West Conference rival Academy of Art Sunday for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff. Note that the match will be played at the City College of San Francisco.
