Walmer’s Natty Hatty Leads Otters Over ArtU, 4–0

Walmer Martinez scores three consecutive goals as CSUMB improves to 4–0–0

SAN FRANCISCO — A natural hat trick by senior forward Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) proved more than enough to keep visiting Cal State Monterey Bay perfect on the season with a 4–0 win over Academy of Art Sunday at the City College of San Francisco.

Martinez joins Adam Volodor as the only players in Otter history to score three goals in a single game. It helped CSUMB improve to 4–0–0 for just the second time in school history.

The Otters got the only goal they would need in the sixth minute when Jacob Penner (Half Moon Bay HS) cleaned up a scramble on the doorstep following a corner kick for his first collegiate goal. Barely three minutes later, Martinez scored from the penalty spot after being taken down inside the box and the rout was on.

Junior Rasmus Jonsson (Odensvi, Sweden) answered the few times he was called to action, registering a single save while pitching his second consecutive shutout.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Walmer Martinez buried a Colin O'Mahoney feed three minutes after the restart to put the Otters up 3–0.

FOUR AND OH… The Otters improved to 4–0–0 for just the second time in program history and the first time since 2013. That also matches the longest win streak ever in Otter history, a feat accomplished in 2013 and twice in 2002.

ANOTHER NATTY HATTY… With Walmer Martinez's outburst, there now have been two hat tricks in Otter men's soccer history and both have been natural. Adam Volodor also scored three consecutive goals in a 4–3 win over Cal State East Bay on Oct. 29, 2016.

THAT'S FIVE IN FOUR… Walmer Martinez now has five goals in the first four games of 2019. That already ranks No. 13 on the Otter single–season goals scored list. In case you're wondering, Kyle Archibald set the CSUMB record with 16 goals in 2003. Kyle Satow set the CSUMB NCAA era record with 12 goals in 2005.

ANOTHER CLEAN SHEET… The Otters have posted consecutive shutout victories for the eighth time in program history. The have posted more than two such wins in a row just once, when the 2002 squad tossed four consecutive shutouts from Oct. 2–12, 2002.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Walmer Martinez 3; ASSISTS: Colin O'Mahoney 1 1; POINTS: Walmer Martinez 6; SHOTS: Ryan Anderson/Walmer Martinez 7; SAVES: Rasmus Jonsson 1.

THE LAST WORD… "Another really good team performance today and a clean sheet. The lads created a lot of chances and worked really hard. Really pleasing to see Walmer score a hat trick as well." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close the nonconference part of their 2019 schedule when they host UC Santa Cruz Friday (Sept. 20) for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Advance tickets are available online at www.OtterAthletics.com/Tickets.
