Another Game, Another Hat Trick As Otters Roll Slugs

Pedro Hernandez records second consecutive Otter hat trick in 7–2 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay finished the nonconference portion of its 2019 schedule with another offensive explosion, scoring its most goals as an NCAA member in a 7–2 win over UC Santa Cruz Friday night at the Otter Sports Complex.
Junior Pedro Hernandez (Bay Point/Mt. Diablo HS) joined the Otter feeding frenzy with a hat trick—the second by an otter in as many games. Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) turned the trick in a 4–0 win at Academy of Art Sunday evening.

Hernandez was not the only Otter to enjoy a big game. Senior Luis Lopez (Martinez/DeAnza HS) scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season—the latter coming on an absolute cracker from 30 yards out.

Freshman Ryan Anderson (San Marcos HS) opened the scoreline with his first collegiate goal in the third minute. He added assists on the first two Hernandez goals to complete a 4–point night. Freshman Matthew Kirk (Derry, Ireland) capped the scoring by taping home a beautiful series of passes from Martinez and Matthew Lee (Sacramento, Calif.) in the 75th minute.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Luis Lopez scored his first of the match and fourth of the season on the half hour to make it 3–0 Otters. UCSC never got closer than two goals the rest of the way.

THAT DIDN'T TAKE LONG, HAT TRICK EDITION… After recording just one hat trick (Adam Volodor, 2016) in its first 405 game over 22–plus seasons, the Otters posted two hat tricks in their last two contests. Walmer Martinez had the natural hat trick at Academy of Art on Sept. 15 before Pedro Hernandez recorded his hatty Friday night vs. UC Santa Cruz.

SEVEN IS A LUCKY NUMBER… The seven goals scored by the Otters Friday night were their most ever at the NCAA level (since 2004). Their previous high at the NCAA level was five goals, which they scored four times, last in a win over Cal State East Bay on Oct. 10, 2018. In case you're curious, the all–time Otter record for goals in a match was 14 in a 14–0 win over Bethany College on Oct. 4, 2003.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Pedro Hernandez 3; ASSISTS: Ryan Anderson/Walmer Martinez 2; POINTS: Pedro Hernandez 6; SHOTS: Luis Lopez 5; SAVES: Rasmus Jonsson 5.

THE LAST WORD… "Really happy with the performance from the lads tonight. We scored some really good team goals and created a lot of chances. I really enjoy working with these hardworking young men every day." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters open CCAA play next week when they host Cal State San Marcos Friday (Sept. 27) for a doubleheader. The women will kick off at 4:30 p.m. and the men will kickoff at 7 p.m.
