Martinez Up To His Old Tricks As Otters Remain Unbeaten

Walmer Martinez nets his second hat trick in three games as Otters tie San Marcos

SEASIDE, Calif. — It took Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer 18 years to record its first hat trick. It took Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) three games to claim his first two.

For the second time in three matches, Martinez recorded a hat trick, scoring all three Otter goals as Cal State Monterey Bay remained unbeaten (5–0–1) with a 3–3 tie against Cal State San Marcos Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Martinez's second trick (he scored three in a win at Academy of Art on Sept. 15), actually marked the third consecutive game in which an Otter has scored a hatty. Junior Pedro Hernandez (Bay Point/Mt. Diablo HS) turned the trick in a win over UC Santa Cruz on Sept. 20.

As for Friday's team result, the Otters needed some Martinez magic to overcome a magical night for San Marcos. The Cougars put just three shots on frame over the 110 minute of double–overtime action, but all three found the back of the net.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… The Otters cleared a San Marcos free kick with 30 seconds remaining in the second overtime. It was the final scoring opportunity for either side.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS… The Otters had more than a shot to win Friday's match versus San Marcos. They out–shot the Cougars 11–2 in the first half alone and 19–6 for the match.

CRAZY EIGHT… We're not quite halfway through the season and Walmer Martinez has eight goals. That already ranks No. 5 on the Otter single–season goal scoring list. Kyle Archibald set the CSUMB record with 16 goals in 2003.

MARTINEZ MAKES A POINT… Walmer Martinez already has 19 points this season (on eight goals and three assists). That is tied for No. 9 on the Otter list for points in a season. Kyle Archibald set the Otter record with 35 points (16 goals, three assists) in 2003.

ONE MORE POINT TO MAKE… Servando Perez set the Otter record for points in a season at the NCAA level with 25 points (11 goals, three assists) in 2013.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Walmer Martinez 3; ASSISTS: Matthew Lee 2; POINTS: Walmer Martinez 6; SHOTS: Luis Lopez 7; SAVES: None.

THE LAST WORD… "Really happy with some of our attacking play and great goals that we scored. Disappointed to have conceded three goals, but delighted with the guys' attitudes after conceding. Looking forward to Sunday and an exciting season with this great group of players." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude the 3–match homestand by hosting UC San Diego Sunday at 2 p.m.
