UCSD scores two goals 14 seconds apart in second half to take the win

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — UC San Diego used a lock–down defense to earn a 2–0 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in a physical affair Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. The Tritons scored two goals just 14 seconds apart in the 51st minute to account for all of the scoring.

The match featured nearly as many bookings (seven) as shots (10). The biggest came on the hour when Otter defender Jacob Penner drew a red card for abusive language, forcing CSUMB to play the final half hour down a man.

CSUMB managed a season–low two shots for the afternoon. Take away the 14–second flurry for UCSD and the Otter defense was almost equally as stingy, limiting the Tritons to six shots over the other 89:46 of the match.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Jacob Penner drew a red card in the 60th minute. With UCSD's defense in top form, the 10–man Otters could not record a shot over the final 30:21.

A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING… Sunday's loss was the first setback of the Graeme Jaap era of Otter soccer. CSUMB began the season 5–0–1, its best start ever.

A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING, PART II… After scoring 20 goals in their first six contests (3.3 per match), the Otters were shutout for the first time in 2019 Sunday against UCSD. It marked the first time 17 home matches that the Otters failed to score in a non–overtime match. That streak dates back to a 1–0 loss to then No. 18 Cal State L.A. on Oct. 6, 2017.

SUNDAY FUN DAY…Sundays are usually are fun days for the Otter men's soccer team. The setback to UCSD was CSUMB's first Sunday loss since a 2–0 defeat at then No. 13 Cal State L.A. on Oct. 6, 2018.

THAT'S LIGHTENING FAST… When Brett Jones and Jonathan Sabouri scored at 50:14 and 50:28 respectively, they became just the 15th duo from the same team to score in less than 15 seconds in NCAA Division II history. In case you're wondering, the record of five seconds was set by Ian Martin and Joash Dukes of Florida International against St. Thomas on Nov. 7, 1979.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Marcus Decouto/Walmer Martinez 1; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play a rare midweek game at Cal State East Bay as the Pioneers and Otters renew the Battle of the Bays Wednesday (Oct. 2) in Hayward. Kickoff will be at 12:30 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
