Otters Bounce Back With 4–1 Win At Cal State East Bay

CSUMB fires the first salvo in the 2019–20 Battle of the Bays

HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer bounced back into the win column Wednesday afternoon with a convincing 4–1 victory over Cal State East Bay at Pioneer Stadium.

The win lifts CSUMB (6–1–1, 1–1–1 CCAA) into third place in the early CCAA standings. It also give the Otters the first four points in their annual Battle of the Bays competition with East Bay (2–6–0, 0–2–0).

Despite out–shooting the Pioneers 5–0, CSUMB had trouble breaking through early as East Bay was content to play nine behind the ball in the first half. It took less than five minutes after the restart for the Otters to break through, however, when a beautiful individual effort by Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) created space for freshman Matthew Kirk (Derry, Ire.) to net his second goal of the season.

Nine minutes later, Martinez did the job himself, scoring his CCAA–leading ninth goal of the season after beating a pair of defenders down the wing and rifling an unsavable shot past Pioneer goalkeeper Sean O'Brien.

Pedro Hernandez (Bay Point/Mt. Diablo HS) made it 3–0 Otters in the 71st minute. East Bay pulled one back 11 minutes from time, but Martinez created another score that was credited as an own goal three minutes later to close the scoreline.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Pedro Hernandez scored his fourth of the season from inside the penalty area to make it 3–0 with less than 20 minutes to play.

MARTINEZ MOVES UP… Walmer Martinez continued his climb up the Otter single–season scoring lists with a goal and a helper Wednesday at East Bay. Martinez scored his ninth goal of the season to tie Nathan Northup (2003) for the No. 4 spot. He needs two more to tie Servando Perez (2013) for No. 3 and the most goals scored at the NCAA level (2004–present.).

FOUR IN A HALF… The Otters put four behind East Bay in the second half Wednesday afternoon. It's the second time this season CSUMB has accomplished that feat (Sept. 20 versus UC Santa Cruz). It's the fourth time the Otters have scored at least four goals in a half. They scored a record five in the second half of last season's 5–0 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills (Oct. 4, 2018). N.B. During their NAIA, era the Otters beat San Jose Christian 10–1 and Bethany College 14–0, although full stats aren't available for those games.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Pedro Hernandez/Matthew Kirk/Walmer Martinez 1; ASSISTS: Walmer Martinez 1; POINTS: Walmer Martinez 3; SHOTS: Walmer Martinez, 5; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 2.

THE LAST WORD… "Really pleased with how we moved the ball in the second half. We kept at them and scored some good goals. I'm really happy for the guys and now we will recover and go again on Sunday." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to host a CCAA doubleheader against Sonoma State Sunday afternoon (Oct. 6). The men will kickoff at 2 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
