Fluke Goal Sinks Otters In Battle With Seawolves, 1–0

CSUMB holds Seawolves without a shot on frame in the final 88 minutes

SEASIDE, Calif. — One of the flukier goals you will ever see in a collegiate soccer match turned out to be the death knell for the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team as visiting Sonoma State rode the early miscue to a 1–0 victory Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otter defense literally whiffed on an easy clearance attempt less than two minutes into the match and Sean Rohane tapped the garbage into a wide open net. It turned out to be the only shot Sonoma would put on frame in the match.

CSUMB carried the action for wide swaths of the match with Sonoma seemingly content to probe for counter opportunities. Although the Otters won possessionally, with a huge time of possession advantage, and positionally, with an 8–2 edge in corners, the Seawolf defense was stout when the ball found its way to the box.

The Otters created several chances and their most dangerous came in the final seconds. A strong Harry Barba (Yucaipa HS) cross found its way to the back post, where Adrian Rebollar (Watsonville HS) was set to tap in the equalizer. But Sonoma goalkeeper Derik Engelbretsen laid out his 6–foot–6 inch frame to tap the ball just outside the post and his defense was able to clear as the final horn sounded.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Derik Engelbretsen dived to deny Adrian Rebollar the equalizer with three seconds remaining in regulation.

ON THE BRINK OF HISTORY… With a win over Sonoma on Sunday, the Otters would have produced 14 wins over the past 1+ seasons. The MB record for wins over consecutive season is 14 (2012–13 and again in 2013–14).

THE DEFENSE ALMOST RESTS… Fluke goal aside, the Otter defense was a bright spot Sunday. CSUMB's back line didn't allow a single shot on frame in the match…except for the gimme, of course.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Ryan Anderson/Adrian Rebollar 2; SAVES: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will take 12 days off before returning to action Friday, Oct. 18 at San Francisco State. The men will kickoff at 12:30 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
