10–Man Otters Can’t Find Equalizer In Loss At SFSU

Early goal and red card lead to 1–0 loss to Gators

SAN FRANCISCO — A goal early in the first half and a red card early in the second were enough to sink visiting Cal State Monterey Bay in a 1–0 defeat to San Francisco State Friday at Cox Stadium.

Francisco Saucedo bulled home the rebound off a vicious shot from Brandon Sands in the 21st minute to account for the game's lone score. When freshman Matthew Kirk (Derry, Ireland) picked up a red card four minutes after the interval, the Otters fell further behind the eight ball.

Despite playing a man up for the final 41 minutes, the Gators mostly sat back, content to absorb Otter pressure. CSUMB almost made them pay late, but Matthew Lee's (Sacramento, Calif.) shot 30 seconds from time rang off the crossbar.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Matthew Lee hit the crossbar in the 90th minute, leaving the Otters inches from the equalizer.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS… Despite playing most of the second half down a man, the Otters still out–shot the Gators 2–1 in the period and 7–5 for the game.

NOT SO MELLOW YELLOW… Cards flew around the Cox Stadium pitch Friday afternoon, with the Otters being assessed five yellow cards and one red card for the match. SFSU earned a single yellow card. The foul count for the afternoon went 20–9 against CSUMB.

FEAST OR FAMINE… It's been feast or famine for the Otters so far in 2019. The Otters have been shutout in all three of their losses. In their other seven games (6–0–1), the Otters scored 24 goals. That equates to what would be a school–record 3.43 goals per game pace.

A GOAL IS THE GOAL… The Otters suffered their second consecutive shutout Friday at San Francisco State. It marks the first time they have been shutout in consecutive games since Sept. 22–24, 2017.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Marcus Decouto/Matthew Kirk/Matthew Lee 2; SAVES: Daniel Lomeli 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will complete the long trip up the coast with a visit to Humboldt State Sunday (Oct. 20). The men will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. as the opening match of a men's/women's doubleheader.
