Lia Kilgore’s Penalty Kick Leads Otters Over Hilo

Sophomore scores from the spot with 30 seconds left in OT for a 2–1 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore Lia Kilgore (San Francisco/Mission HS) scored a penalty kick with 30 seconds left in double overtime to lead Cal Sate Monterey Bay to 2–1 win over Hawaii–Hilo Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Kilgore's game winner came at the perfect time for the Otters. With time running out in the second overtime, Allexxis Hand (Hacienda Heights/Los Altos HS) drew a foul as she drove towards the left post.
Kilgore stepped to the penalty spot and scored her second career match–winner and her first Otter goal.

CSUMB took the lead in the 40th minute when Sierra Levy (Tulare Western HS) scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Ale Gonzalez (Concord/College Park HS). The Vulcans tied the game in 63rd minute when Senior Brianne Valencia scored her first collegiate goal.

The Otters improved to 2–0. It was the season opener for Hawaii–Hilo.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN…  Lia Kilgore scored off a penalty kick with 30 seconds left in the second overtime.

TWO AND OH… The Otters improved to 2–0 for just the third time in school history (2012, 2016). The Otters have never started a season 3–0.

MAGNIFICENT SEVEN… With six saves in Saturday's win over Hawaii–Hilo, junior goalkeeper Alyssa Noh moved up to No. 7 on the Otter career saves list with 104. Next up are No. 6 Valentina Valdez (106 saves from 2004–05) and No. 5 Andrea Davis (108 saves from 2009–12). Melissa Moen (2002–05) owns the Otter career record with 219 saves.

KILGORE IS CLUTCH… Lia Kilgore has scored three goal in 21 career collegiate appearances, and two of those have been match–winners. Not only did her spot kick earn the win Saturday versus Hawaii–Hilo, her first collegiate goal (as a member of the Chico State Wildcats in 2017) beat Concordia Portland on Sept. 2, 2017.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Sierra Levy/Lia Kilgore 1; ASSISTS: Ale Gonzalez 1; POINTS: Sierra Levy/Lia Kilgore 2 2; SHOTS: Melissa Wilson 2; SAVES: Alyssa Noh 6.

THE LAST WORD… "We battled a tough and fresh Hawaii–Hilo squad today after playing on Thursday and came out with a win. To get a win on a day where we weren't our best was tremendous. I'm proud of the team effort and the team grit. " – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for the first time in 2019 with a nonconference match at Menlo College Wednesday (Sept. 11). As always, links for live stats and video will be available at OtterAthletics.com.
