Otters Improve To 3–0 For First Time With 4–1 Win

Otters defeat Menlo College on the road; return home to host Western Oregon Saturday

ATHERTON, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team improved to 3–0 for the first time in program history with a decisive 4–1 win over Menlo College Wednesday at Wunderlich Field.

Junior striker Allexxis Hand (Hacienda Heights/Los Altos HS) caught Menlo goalkeeper Michelle Gonzalez straying too far off her line to put the Otters up 1–0 before the 5–minute mark. Sophomore Maya Richardson (Sacramento/West Campus HS) double the lead in the 44th minute off a nice through ball from Ale Gonzalez (College Park HS/Diablo Valley College).

Sophomore Lia Kilgore (San Francisco/Mission HS) made it 3–0 five minutes after the restart on a nicely timed run created by Jasmine Safarians (Pleasant Hill/College Park HS). Sophia Zertuche (Madera South HS/Fresno CC) closed the scoreline with her second of 2019 in the 70th minute.

The shots total favored the Otters 18–12, but nearly all of the dangerous chances belonged to the Otters. The Oaks had two solid chances of their own, one finished by Kori–Ann Koverman in the 58th minute and the other tipped brilliantly around the post by senior Alyson Schade (Brea–Olinda HS), making her debutante collegiate appearance in goal in relief of starter Alyssa Noh (Aliso Niguel HS).

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Lia Kilgore scored her second goal in as many matches less than six minutes into the second half to make it 3–0.

THREE AND OH… The Otters are 3–0 for the first time in program history. Prior to this season, the Otters started 2–0 in both 2012 and 2016.

PLAYING WITH HOUSE MONEY… Win or lose in their next game (Saturday vs. Western Oregon), the Otters will be off to the best start in program history after four contests. CSUMB began the 2012 season at 3–1.

HIGH FIVE FOR NOH… With three saves Wednesday at Menlo, Alyssa Noh moved up to No. 5 on the Otter career saves list with 109. Next up is Victoria Whyte, who collected 116 saves from 2015–18. Melissa Moen set the CSUMB record with 219 saves from 2002–05.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Four Otters 1; ASSISTS: Jasmine Safarians 2; POINTS: Five Otters 2; SHOTS: Four Otters 3; SAVES: Alyssa Noh 3.

THE LAST WORD… "I thought we did a good job attacking in a match where we got to use a lot of players. There's still much to work on, but we definitely are headed in the right direction." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to host West Region rival Western Oregon Saturday (Sept. 14). Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. If you can't make it to the Otter Sports Complex, catch the action live on the CCAA Sports Network and Campus Televideo Ch. 73.
