SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Senior
Walmer Martinez (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College) chipped home the golden goal in the 97th minute as Cal State Monterey Bay opened the
Graeme Jaap era with a 1–0 win over Holy Names University Friday at Dominican University.
The teams poked and prodded but produced little more than six CSUMB corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes. At the interval, however, the Otters found their footing and began creating dangerous chances.
Martinez,
Matthew Lee (Sacramento, Calif.) and freshman
Colin O'Mahoney (Cork, Ireland) each had direct looks on goal only to be stymied by Hawk goalkeeper Mark Redfield.
Overtime brought better Otter fortunes. Seven minutes in,
Jacob Penner (Half Moon Bay HS) half–volleyed a long Redford goal kick back into the Holy Names defensive third. Martinez outfought a trio of Hawk defenders for the loose ball outside the 18–yard box and lofted a shot into the upper right vee.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Walmer Martinez lofted a shot from the top of the box just over the outstretched reach of HNU goalkeeper Mark Redfield for the golden goal in the 97th minute.
REVERSAL OF FORTUNE… Friday's result ended a run of tough luck for the Otters in extra time. CSUMB had been 0–8–4 in its last 12 overtime matches.
THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN BOOT… The strike by
Walmer Martinez was the first golden goal by an Otters since
Michael Maul beat Notre Dame de Namur 52 seconds into OT on Sept. 3, 2015.
KEEP IT CLEAN… Senior
Daniel Lomeli posted his third career shutout Friday against Holy Names. It also marked his eighth victory, giving him sole possession of fourth place on the Otter career wins list.
