Otters Hang With Nation’s Top Team Before Falling 2–0

UCSD scores early and late to win; Alyson Schade makes 10 saves in her second collegiate start

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team knew it would have its hands full when No. 1 ranked UC San Diego paid a visit to the Otter Sports Complex Sunday afternoon. With the Otters starting a defender in goal and the Tritons fired up after being upset in a tie at East Bay Friday night, the task figured to be even more daunting.

The Otters held there own and then some. In the end, however, the mountain proved too big to climb as UCSD scored early and late to take a 2–0 decision.

The Triton strategy appeared to be to ask Schade questions early. UCSD shot from often and from everywhere and, for most of the match, Schade had the answers. She faced 21 shots and made 10 saves.

The Tritons solved her just twice. Mika Celeste got one just over Schade's fingertips in the fifth minute and Erika Braun snuck one inside the near post in the 78th.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Erika Braun finished an Ashlynn Kolarik pass from inside the penalty area to make it 2–0 UCSD in the 78th minute.

SCHADE HANGS 10… Alyson Schade entered some pretty exclusive company in her second collegiate start in goal. Her 10 saves rank No. 6 for most saves in a match by an Otter. In case you're wondering, Victoria Whyte set the MB record with 14 saves against UCSD on Oct. 9, 2016.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END… CSUMB's record–setting unbeaten streak ended at seven contests (6–0–1) with Sunday's 2–0 setback to UCSD. Not only was it the longest such streak to open the season for the Otter women, it was their longest unbeaten streak of any kind.

THE FIRST DEUCE OF THE SEASON… UCSD became the first Otter opponent to score two goals this season. It is just the fourth time in 24 home matches under Head Coach Laura VanWart that the Otters have surrendered two goals in match.

BUT ONLY A DEUCE… It's worth noting that in 24 home matches during the Laura VanWart era, the Otters have never allowed an opponent to score more than two goals in a match.

THE LAST WORD… "You either win or get better. Today, we got better. After missing some early chances we took a goal off a corner. This threw us off our rhythm and we got pinned back a bit. When we were able to open up and play we had some really good moments. But, moving forward, we have to be more clinical in finishing our chances." — CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Allexxis Hand/Maya Richardson 1; SAVES: Alyson Schade 10.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play a rare midweek game at Cal State East Bay as the Pioneers and Otters renew the Battle of the Bays Wednesday (Oct. 2) in Hayward. Kickoff will be at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
