Short–Handed Otters Can’t Break Through At East Bay

Otters fall in the Battle of the Bays, 1–0

HAYWARD, Calif. — Short–handed Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't find a way to the back of the net for the second consecutive game when it fell 1–0 at Cal State East Bay Wednesday afternoon at Pioneer Stadium.

Down three starting defenders due to injury—and with a fourth playing as emergency goalkeeper due to another knock—the patchwork defensive corps held its own by allowing just a single first–half goal in an otherwise stout performance. For its part, the Otter offense generated 11 shots and a handful of dangerous opportunities but put couldn't put a ball away.

East Bay netted the lone score in the 25th minute when Bri Vallente floated a cross into the middle of the goal mouth. The ball hopped high off the Pioneer Stadium artificial turf and Riley Spitzer judged the bounce better than the Otter defense for the tap–in header.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… the Otters couldn't convert any of three consecutive throw–ins deep in the East Bay territory in the 89th minute.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS… The 11 shots generated Wednesday at East Bay were the second–most of the season by the Otter offense. It also marked the third time CSUMB has posted double–digit shots in 2019. The Otters put 18 (with four goals) in a win at Menlo on Sept. 11 and 10 in a 0–0 tie at Dominican on Sept. 16.

IS THIS THE REAL SLIM SCHADE? After making her first 24 collegiate start as a defender, Alyson Schade has found a new calling as a goalkeeper. She's played in a four matches and started the last three in place of injured starter Alyssa Noh. In that time, Schade has made 10 saves and posted a solid 0.99 goals against average. Projected over a whole season, her GAA would rank No. 4 in the Otter record book.

THE OTTERS WOULD RATHER SAY NOH TO SCHADE… For as well as Alyson Schade has acquitted herself in goal, the Otters are looking forward to the return of starter Alyssa Noh. No has a 0.46 GAAin 2019 (her 0.82 career GAA is the Otter record) and needs just two more shutouts to break the CSUMB career record of 12 set by Melissa Moen (2002–05).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Jasmine Safarians 3; SAVES: Alyson Schade 4.

THE LAST WORD… "Tough loss on the road today. East Bay finished its chance and we continue to not capitalize on our chances. We have to be more clinical in from of goal and more dangerous in the final third." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to host a CCAA doubleheader against Sonoma State Sunday afternoon (Oct. 6). The women will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
