Deflected Goal Proves Decisive In Battle With Sonoma

40th–minute deflection in the box leads to game’s lone goal in 1–0 Sonoma win

SEASIDE, Calif. — An unlucky deflection inside the six yard box set up what proved to be the game's lone goal as Sonoma State outlasted Cal State Monterey Bay for a 1–0 win Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The injury–ravaged Otters went toe–to–toe with the CCAA leaders all afternoon and left the field feeling unlucky without at least a share of the spoils. Sonoma's Raina Wristen secured all three points for the visitor's when she found a deflected Chiara Rigatuso pass at her feet inside the six yard box in the 40th minute.

The Seawolves owned the majority of possession, but the Otters had their chances as well. In fact CSUMB had a golden opportunity to take the lead just past the half hour when Maya Richardson (Sacramento/West Campus HS) found the ball in the box. But Sonoma goalkeeper Ashley Morton charged out to make a brave one–on–one save and deny the Otter sophomore a golden opportunity.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Melissa Wilson's attempt went wide in the 88th minute. It was the final shot for either team.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END… CSUMB saw its 2–match win streak versus Sonoma State end with Sunday's 1–0 decision.

WELCOME BACK ALYSSA NOH… The Otters got a little good news on the injury front as junior goalkeeper Alyssa Noh returned after a 3–match absence.

THREE DOWN, THREE TO GO… Alyssa Noh posted three saves Sunday, bringing her career total to 132. She needs three more to catch Graciela Holguin (2008, 10) for No. 3 on the Otter career saves list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: None; SHOTS: Melissa Wilson 2; SAVES: Alyssa Noh 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will take 12 days off before returning to action Friday, Oct. 18 at San Francisco State. The women will kickoff at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
