Jasmine Safarians scores 37 seconds into the second half, Otters tame Cougars 1–0

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore Jasmine Safarians (Pleasant Hill/College Park HS) scored 37 seconds after the interval to keep the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team unbeaten with a 1–0 win over Cal State San Marcos Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Safarians' strike was the second and final shot the Otters put on frame in the match, but it was enough to let them continue their best–ever start. CSUMB improved to 6–0–1 with the victory. Not only that the best start in program history, it's the longest unbeaten streak as well.

Another big story line for the Otters was senior Alyson Schade (Brea–Olinda HS), who made her first collegiate start in goal. With starting goalkeeper Alyssa Noh day–to–day, Schade answered the call all five time she was challenged to make her debutante performance a shutout.

While defense dominated a tightly–played first half, San Marcos created more opportunities in the second, out–shooting the Otters 7–1 after intermission.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Alyson Schade denied Devyn Kelley's shot in the 83rd minute. It proved to be the final chance for the Cougars.

TAMING THE COUGARS… Friday's victory was the first in five tries for the Otter women against San Marcos. The Otters entered the match 0–3–1 versus the Cougars.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Friday's shutout was the fourth by the Otters in seven outings this season. That already ranks No. 9 for a season in Otter history. The school record of nine shutouts came last season.

SPREADING THE WEALTH… Jasmine Safarians became the sixth different Otter to score a goal through the first seven games of 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Jasmine Safarians 1; ASSISTS: Sierra Levy/Gabby Pejovich 1; POINTS: Jasmine Safarians 2; SHOTS: Four Otters 1; SAVES: Alyson Schade 5.

THE LAST WORD… "It was a team win against a physical San Marcos team. We were able to create some great chances despite the high pressure and finally capitalized on a set piece. It was a great win to open CCAA play." – CSUMB Head Coach Laura VanWart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters play host to the nation's top–ranked team when UC San Diego visits Sunday for an 11:30 a.m. kickoff
