Otters Fall In Three Tight Sets At Chico State

Jenna Tobin hits .500 with 10 kills and just one error

CHICO, Calif. — The long, season–opening roadtrip has had its ups and downs for the young Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team. Friday night in match number nine of the 10–match trip, the Otters played well against perennial CCAA North Division contender Chico State before falling in three tough sets, 26–24, 25–21, 25–22 in Acker Gym.

Junior outside hitter Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) hit a season–high .500 with 10 kills against just one error. Freshman outside hitter Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) led the team in kills for the second consecutive match with 11.

The Otters appeared to have the opening set in hand, leading 24–20 before the Wildcats rallied to score six consecutive points to pull it out of the fire. CSUMB trailed 24–20 in the second set but could only pull one point back before Chico held on for the win.

The teams played through five ties and five lead changes in the third set. CSUMB took its final lead at 21–20 but couldn't hold on late.

In addition to Tobin and Honberger, freshman middle Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) returned to the lineup and registered a match–high four blocks. Freshman Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) made her first collegiate start at libero and led the Otters with 14 digs..

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Kim Wright's kill capped a late Chico rally to seal the third set.

TORRES JOINS THE 300 CLUB… Sophomore setter Sophia Torres collected 27 assists Friday night at Chico, and, in so doing, became the 13th player in Otter history to record 300 career assists (314 and counting).

THAT WAS UNUSUAL… Seeing a sweep in a match between Cal State Monterey Bay and Chico State is a bit like spotting a unicorn. In the last 20 meetings, there have been only three sweeps. By contrast, the team have gone the full five sets in 11 of those 20 matches.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Kaylie Honberger 11.5; KILLS: Kaylie Honberger 11; BLOCKS: Mollin Helfrich 4; ACES: Alexa Blunt 2; DIGS: Sam Chavez 14.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm really proud of the response from our team tonight. Chico was better than us in the 20s and that was the difference. We are closer every match to putting it all together. We are a really young team, but we are getting better every day and I know we will get where we need to be." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their season–opening, 10–match roadtrip by playing at Stanislaus State Saturday (Sept. 21). First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
