Otters Open CCAA Tournament With Win Over S.F. State

Kokko Figueiredo swings the big bat with a 2–run double and 2–run homer

STOCKTON, Calif. — A pair of big knocks from designated hitter Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna HS/College of the Redwoods) powered No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay past San Francisco State 8–5 to open play at the CCAA Championship Tournament at Banner Island Ballpark Wednesday afternoon.

Wednesday's win wasn't easy and it wasn't always pretty, but thanks to a 2–run double and a 2–run homer by Figueiredo, it was enough to get the important first victory. CSUMB (32–19) advances into the winner's bracket to face No. 4 seed Stanislaus State, an 11–6 winner of Chico State, Thursday at 7 p.m.

Four Otter errors led to four unearned runs as SFSU battled back from deficits of 2–0 and 5–2 to twice tie the game. Each time the Gators drew even, however, Figueiredo had an answer.

After SFSU tied the game at 2–2 in the top of the third, Figueiredo lined a 2–out, 2–run double over the head of center fielder Jack Harris to put the Otters back on top. Three CSUMB errors in the top of the eighth allowed three more unearned runs to scored to tied the game at 5–5. This time, Figueiredo's answer was a towering 2–run home run to right field.

Senior second baseman Kyle Czaplak (Pacific Grove HS) followed figueiredo's blast with a solo shot to account for the final margin.

CSUMB's fielding lapses nearly spoiled another solid start from junior Greg Steinbeck (San Benito HS), who allowed just five hits and one earned run in six innings. Senior Jeffery Ahern (Anderson HS) was the victim of three errors in two strong innings of relief, but earned the win to improve to 6–0 on the season.

Junior Parker Fokken (Chaffey College) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his team–leading fourth save of the season.

Figueiredo finished the day 2–for–4 with four RBI. Senior center fielder TJ Dove (Yuba CC) went 3–for–5 with a double and a stolen base. Junior right fielder Kyle Dean's (Rancho Bernardo HS) RBI single in the sixth inning extended his hitting streak to 13 games, the longest by an Otter this season.
