Key Hits Elude CSUMB As Otters Fall In CCAA Opener

Otters drop 5–3 decision to Sonoma State, will face Chico State Friday at 2:30 p.m.

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay jumped to an early 3–0 lead but couldn't find the key hits it needed late in falling to Sonoma State 5–3 to open the 2019 CCAA Championship Tournament Thursday at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (27–24) advances to play No. 2 seed Chico State in an elimination game Friday at 2:30 p.m. The Wildcats fell to Cal State San Bernardino 7–5 in Thursday's late game.

Prior to the game, sophomore pitcher Ellie Bauer (San Rafael HS) earned the CCAA Championship Scholar Award as the student–athlete with the highest GPA competing at the championship tournament. Bauer is a kinesiology student with a 4.0 GPA. She is the third Otter to win the award this season, joining Elis Svard (golf) and Logan Phillips (cross country).

The Otters took advantage of a pair of hit batters, an error, and a Lusi Stanley (San Bruno/Howard College) single to score three runs in the second inning. They nursed that lead into the fourth when Sonoma parlayed four singles and a sac fly into a 4–3 lead.

CSUMB had a golden opportunity to retake the lead in the fifth when Marissa Hukkanen (Calaveras HS) led off with a single and Courtney Hennings doubled to the wall in right center. But the middle of the Otter order couldn't find a way to get either runner home.

The Otters advanced runners to second base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but left them stranded again, allowing the Seawolves to hang on for the win.

In addition to Hennings, pinch–hitter Shaye Felix (Piedmont HIlls HS/Cal Baptist) doubled for CSUMB. Korina Krueg (Tokay HS/Cosumnes River College) and Gabrielle Forbes (San Jose/Presentation HS) claimed CSUMB's two RBI.

The 2019 CCAA Softball Championship Tournament continues with three games Friday at the Otter Sports Complex. UC San Diego and Sonoma State will play a winner's bracket game at noon preceding the CSUMB–Chico Clash. The winner of the CSUMB–Chico game will face San Francisco State at 5 p.m.
