Two More Gems Lead To Twinbill Sweep Of No. 13 Chico

Hayley Fein, Celeste Villagrana limit Wildcats to two earned runs in 3–1, 6–2 victories

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got two more pitching gems and combined that with a creative offense to sweep a doubleheader from No. 13 Chico State, 3–1 and 6–2, Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Senior Celeste Villagrana (Anaheim/Howard College) capped her phenomenal weekend by out–dueling Chico ace Brooke Larsen to win the opener. Villagrana, who fanned a career–high 11 in a shutout win Saturday, opened Sunday's game with five more shutout innings before finally yielding an unearned run in the sixth. Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) came on to throw 1 2/3 innings of perfect relief to close the win.

A 2–out, RBI triple by Nikki Jones (Cordova HS) staked Villagrana to a 1–0 lead in the second. Courtney Hennings (Amador Valley HS) stole home as part of a double steal in a 2–run Otter fifth for what proved to be the winning run.

In the series finale, Fein gave up a leadoff double and an RBI single to allow Chico to take a 1–0 lead. But the Otters answered right back when Marissa Hukkanen (Calaveras HS) led off with a single and scored two pitches later on Hennings' RBI double. That opened a 4–run first inning that gave Fein more than enough support.

After allowing the run, Fein faced just three batters over the minimum for the final 6 2/3 innings. Only a 2–out, 2–strike home run in the seventh spoiled the nearly perfect finish.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Hayley Fein came in to get the last two batters in the sixth inning, keeping the final Wildcat rally to a single run.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kristen Worley couldn't hang on to a sharp liner off the bat of Savanna Salyer Kovacs with two outs in the first inning, allowing a pair of unearned runs to score. With the exception of the 2–out homer in the seventh, Chico never threatened that lead.

A NEARLY SPOTLESS WEEKEND… Celeste Villagrana enjoyed a nearly spotless weekend while shutting down one of the nation's top teams. She allowed just a single, unearned run in 12 1/3 innings, striking out 15 and holding Chico to a .200 batting average.

JONES BUSTS OUT THE BIG BAT… Although known mostly as a speedster with a slick glove, junior Nikki Jones enjoyed the best offensive day of her collegiate career. She finished Sunday's doubleheader 3–for–5 with a double, a triple and a stolen base.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Celeste Villagrana (W [8–7], 5.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 4 K); Hayley Fein (W [13–8], Sv [1], CG, 2 R, 6 H, 4 K, 0 BB); Nikki Jones (3x5, 2B, 3B, R, RBI, SB); Courtney Hennings (2x4, 2B, 2 R, RBI, SB); Alyssa Burt (2x5, R, SB).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the other Bay area for a key 4–games series at San Francisco State starting Friday at 1 p.m.
